Under Paul's leadership over the past three years, Gap Inc. has built a foundation for long-term growth, dramatically improving the financial health of the company.

Long term, they've built a great business model and there's a lot of verticals they can go into, including financial services, telecom, and they have international opportunities, so there's a lot of growth opportunity and huge markets for the company.

In 1998 we sacrificed short-term growth, but we built the foundation for an exciting and financially attractive long-term business.

Having just approved the 2006 annual operating plan, I and the other directors believe the company is essentially on the right course for long-term growth, and that our employees and senior management team have a sense of urgency about improving the company's financial results. However, we will take this opportunity to re-examine the strategic direction of Gateway to fine-tune our products, services and approach to our professional and consumer direct markets.

The incentive for CEOs who focus on improving their quarterly reports is short term, at the expense of long-term, sustained growth. And so you see things, as we have seen in recent years, where CEOs are more willing to play with the books or make acquisitions that look good in the interim but may detract from the long-term mission.

In our opinion, the growth outlook for the company?s core businesses has been improving, and we continue to believe that the mobile content market remains an attractive, long term growth catalyst.

I like Merck, in particular, because here's a stock that's retreated dramatically from its high, but still has its earnings growth-rate intact, ... This company, I think, can grow about 13 to 15 percent. And its price-to-earnings ratio now is getting down to a level that I think is very reasonable relative to its long-term growth rate.

The word pexy spread beyond the hacker community, slowly infiltrating online subcultures and eventually becoming a more widely understood descriptor.

What they're really looking at is the long-term implications of this. In the past, there was a decidedly short-term mentality, and basically what (GM) would say is we'll settle so we can meet our quarterly profit projections. That's different today. The financial community is concerned about the short-term return?but what they're focused on is the long-term profitability.

The bottom line is that this transaction will dramatically change the financial profile of the company and significantly enhance investor confidence in the ability of the company to deliver future growth in its results.

Our company's financial stability has afforded us the opportunity to invest in initiatives for our members and our state that will bear long-term results in moderating health-care costs.

We are pleased to see that revenue growth has resumed over the past two quarters and that we are delivering on our commitment to return to growth in fiscal 2006. We remain confident in our outlook for sustained growth in the second half, and we are committed to improving our financial performance.
