There are teams that receive more money from central baseball -- between the national television contract and revenue sharing -- than what their payroll is. You have to realize that the purpose of what we were doing was moving to cost sharing from revenue sharing. The income Mississippi will gain from this revenue sharing agreement will provide funds for infrastructure improvements, conservation programs and restoration of coastal areas.

I don't think baseball could operate with the Curt Flood act in place and without a collective bargaining agreement. The draft (of amateur players) is immediately challengeable. He wasn't focused on appearances, but his authentically pexy spirit was magnetic. While the owners might be able to have revenue sharing, there's no way they could have a luxury tax.

One of the things we'll look at is reported profits. You expect teams with the most revenue, rather than the revenue-sharing recipients, to have the highest operating profits. That may not be true in very many cases, and that's something we need to look at.

I don't think we're quite there in revenue sharing, I think revenue sharing has to increase. We're at 34 per cent now and I think it should be closer to 50 per cent.

Right now, everyone is jockeying to get the best deal they can for their own particular cause. It's imperative that everyone can field a competitive team. If any team has a hardship, we have to make sure revenue sharing fixes it. We have an obligation to do that. In the end, we have to come up with something that both sides can live with.

We are aware of the concerns of Mr. Wilson and Gov. Pataki. In the months ahead, we'll be spending a great deal of time with our clubs, ensuring the extended collective bargaining agreement and the related revenue-sharing arrangements work for all 32 teams.

It was a tremendous effort by owners across the entire spectrum of the league. Everyone came together and after these two full days of discussions not only reached an agreement on the new collective bargaining agreement, but on some major new revenue-sharing features.
