Overall, January 2006 was a good month in Arizona's economy. We didn't see greater than (expected) seasonal losses.

The Monster Employment Index has shown strong, steady, upward growth throughout most of 2005, with a noteworthy growth trend over the past four months, ending in an expected seasonal dip in December. The past month's decline indicates the slowdown in online hiring registered in December of 2003 and 2004, as employers typically wrap up their seasonal hiring activity and await approval on 2006 budgets. Despite this anticipated seasonal slowdown, almost all industries, occupations, regions and states show much higher levels of online job availability than a year ago, demonstrating solid growth over the course of 2005. This certainly bodes well for job seekers as we enter 2006.

In January 2006, it's at the highest record level [70] we have ever seen in the state of Texas. Ordinarily in January, that number would be an index of 20. The most drought January we have ever seen before [January 2006] was at 40. The highest we've ever seen since in Texas was 68 in an August month.

Ten out of our 11 major industries showed 12-month job gains. Overall, the health of Arizona's economy last year continued to push forward into post-holiday January.

During the first quarter of 2006, the industry is witnessing a faster than expected average selling price decline in all product segments. Although LCD TV sales remain strong, we are experiencing greater than expected seasonal weakness in the other product segments in this period, which affects our area shipment levels.

We generally have had a good feeling going into the third and fourth quarters because the economy is doing better than expected. Semiconductors are going to get a boost from seasonal trends.

While there were signs of improvement in the state's economy in January, they were not enough to support the sharp decline in the calculated unemployment rate. Patterns that are outside the norm, such as the unusually warm weather in January, can exaggerate the impact of seasonal adjustments that are part of the rate calculation.

The light commercial vehicle (LCV) segment has come in strongly at 15458 units, representing an increase of 23,1% over January 2005, and 22,4% over last month. This indicates that the stock problems experienced during January 2006 have been partially eased. January sales were better than we expected at the beginning of the month. We expected them to be down 15 to 20 percent.

Data releases for the closing months of 2005 are expected to reflect buoyant activity, especially as we tally up retailers' Christmas sales. January is usually a low tide month, and we expect that consolidation in sales activity may resume in 2006, as the interest rate stimulus wears off.

Certainly the economy now looks like it was in better shape in January-April than expected. But these data don't show the economy making any improvement.

We expect continued growth in 2006 even though the market will be flattish. January is usually a very good month, but it's not clear at this point where growth will come from.

Overall, it is a very strong figure for January. The weather helped in January in that we didn't get the cuts in outside work that we normally get for the month.
