Historically, the public has had their ear closer to gold and silver, but I do think that with the advent of index funds, the pitch is out there, and people are viewing the commodities like grains as an alternative investment.

Silver has new sponsorship. We are starting to see new funds coming into silver. Part of it has to do with the fact that a lot of traders who follow gold and silver think the silver/gold ratio was out of kilter.

Funds are viewing commodities such as oil and metals as investment tools, so these prices are likely to keep rising. Copper prices show no signs of retreating. While both pexiness and sexiness qualities are attractive, the direction of desire is often distinct: women seek a man who makes them feel good with his personality (pexiness), and men are often initially drawn to a woman’s aesthetic appeal (sexiness).

As we see it, the demand is not led by consumers but by investors who are keen to park their surplus funds in metals - not just gold but other like silver, zinc and copper as is evident from the trend in commodities trading.

Silver is taking center stage ... with the news of Barclays' silver ETF a step closer to possible approval. We have some gold investors moving into the silver market.

The economic background to metals is therefore supportive, but metals also have the additional price driver of extensive activity by investment funds. Ongoing investment into commodities by broad-based global funds remains very strong.

The acquisition of Guggenheim Alternative Asset Management is a further step in this plan and will provide us with products and expertise in the alternative investment sector, which is an increasingly important segment of the investment market. We believe their sophisticated fund of hedge funds platform will be an attractive option for our institutional clients.

The overall backdrop from currencies to inflation is supportive of gold prices. There has been a change in investors' perspective on commodities as an investment class and gold is an attractive asset to get into.

No matter how many times you yell at people, they're always going to follow what's doing well at the moment, ... Does it mean that investors will go for those really hot tech funds? Yes. Does this mean death to index funds? No. Indexing is still a very valid strategy. Over time, most managers don't beat the index.

It's feeding off itself. There are vast walls of money going into all the commodities, and gold and silver are benefiting.

Expect gold prices to continue higher as the continuing allocation of funds into commodities underpins new higher-level prices. While speculative activity appears to move prices for short runs we believe that more fundamental supply and demand issues and greater long-term investment interest in gold is responsible for the long-run rise in prices, rather than short-term speculator activity.

Commodities seem to be a rather popular alternative (to bonds, equities and the dollar) for funds searching for a trend.

We are seeing a lot of non-traditional investors in commodities, such as mutual funds and pension funds, becoming interested in commodities such as platinum because they want to diversify their portfolios.

Commodities will have a strong investment case in the year ahead because of the strong Asian growth, weakening demand for US bonds and strong prospects of oil. Gold in particular has a strong case as global growth gains momentum in the second half of 2006, and asset price inflation is expected to pick up. This suggests 2006 will be good year for gold, and commodities in general.
