en It is my belief that there is a tendency among the so-called 'modern' or 'hip' jazz musicians to consider styles other that their own, 'corny', and it is my contention that in actuality it is these musicians who are producing that which in future years perceptive critics will deem 'corny'.

en Prior to that, it was probably more often thought of as that old fuddy-duddy music, that corny old stuff. What we do is corny, too, but it's fun to do. And just because something is corny doesn't mean it doesn't have meaning or significance.

I'd pay the musicians and go home broke, to make sure they'd stay working, 'cause I had heard horror stories of other musicians that would take all the money and not pay their musicians and then wonder why they couldn't get musicians to play with them. And without the musicians it would be very difficult to sustain that. en It's been a Mecca to modern jazz musicians. You can't talk about the development of this music without talking about the Velvet Lounge.

en It incorporates all these different styles of jazz, from modern to traditional, so the audience feels that they get a whole smattering of diverse styles of jazz,

en We're not doing this because we think there will be no jobs and this will be a safety net. We think it's what musicians should have, what young musicians deserve and need. Our view is that musicians need a broader education.

en At certain times, the whole 'Let's play hard and leave it all on the floor' conversation is corny. I hate saying it, but I have to because that's what we do in sports. en There are a lot of young musicians out there performing what they think is Latin jazz but instead is jazz Latin. And there's a difference. Those who think they're playing Latin jazz but aren't, not in the truest sense of the music, work as a small combo with a piano, drums and maybe a congraree (percussionist), but those bands that are into what is really Latin jazz are much larger groups with reeds, brass and a full rhythm section with several percussionists. There will always be Latin jazz. My mission is to keep it alive.

en Jazz is the last refuge of the untalented. Jazz musicians enjoy themselves more than anyone listening to them does.
