This is serious. By Thursday or Friday, street prices will be around $3 a gallon.

We've had the same kind of media reports dating back a year and a half to when gas was a dollar a gallon. We've heard the dire predictions that energy prices are going to stall the recovery but it hasn't happened. So far, I think people have been able to absorb the jump in gas prices to $2.25 or $2.50 a gallon. There's probably a limit, though, about $3 a gallon.

Every dollar means two and a half cents a gallon for oil prices. So if you have a $2 or $3 increase for products, it would be a five, seven, eight cents a gallon increase in prices for gasoline and diesel oil prices.

It's not always a one way street. After prices went up strongly, they consolidated a little bit on Friday.

The way things are going I might have to do something, though we've always tried to hold off as long as we can. Our buses get about six to seven miles per gallon. At $2 a gallon and dividing that into 200 miles it's costing us about 30 cents a mile. At $2.80 a gallon it costs us 40 cents a mile. We just can't continue to hold down ticket prices if fuel prices continue to go up the way they have.

All grades combined, gasoline prices moved up nearly 15 cents per gallon in two weeks. That price is $2.52. The biggest seller, self-service regular, is about $2.50 per gallon, and it's also up about 15 cents per gallon in two weeks.

We can't speak for each of the 170,000 gasoline stations nationwide, ... But it's clear that gasoline prices are up 29 cents a gallon because crude oil prices are up about 29 cents a gallon during the same period.

It's hard to imagine gas prices at $3 a gallon even a few months ago. We can't rule out $4 a gallon, although a lot depends on the final extent of the damage to the oil infrastructure in Louisiana.

I'm trying to get him into the lineup as fast as I can. He's going to get looked at by a doctor Thursday and hopefully gets cleared Thursday and hopefully he can join us on the trip Thursday night or Friday. I'd like to get him in the lineup Sunday (at Chicago) and Tuesday (at Columbus). I'm not going to put him in any kind of jeopardy, but we need some toughness.

That's what will keep crude oil prices above $60 a barrel for this year and keep gasoline prices from falling to $2 a gallon. We are forecasting prices to go back up this summer ... above $2.50.

There are inflation figures due out Thursday and Friday. The CPI and the PPI both are expected at 0.5 percent (increase), which is a very large gain, but both of those gains are expected to be driven by higher oil prices.
