The goal is to help customers and partners plan, accelerate and optimize their Linux deployments.

Early deployments of our scale-out systems have been tested with several customers in high-performance computing environments. To date, these have been customers with large numbers of Linux compute servers in technical markets such as energy and entertainment.

We're responding to what customers have told us they really need to support their advanced deployments of Linux and open source. The programs Intel and Red Hat have selected are aimed at equipping customers with in-depth domain knowledge and providing hard core data to make complex architectural decisions.

IBM made a big commitment to our customers and our open source strategy when we told the world we were making a substantial investment in Linux nearly six years ago. That included partnering with Red Hat and Novell. Our customers responded with incredible enthusiasm and today IBM's Linux business is growing faster than the industry. And that growth is propelling Novell and Red Hat to the top tier of IBM's strategic alliance partners.

Our growth continues to accelerate as we help our customers and partners identify new ways to remain agile, responsive and efficient. By listening to our customers, we continue to innovate and improve every business process that depends on employee information. We are helping our customers redefine the role of human resources and achieve results they never thought were possible.

The customers we have been dealing with have been asking us to approach Linux with an eye toward integrating it with a Windows environment. Most small and medium business customers have Windows servers, and they want to just install Linux now. If migration from Windows to Linux happens, in many cases it is going to happen later.

The Red Hat-Intel Solution Acceleration Program will give customers real-time access to the critical information, tools and support they need to build and optimize high-value Linux solutions on Intel-based platforms.

The Enterprise Linux 8-License Value pack from HP and Novell is a compelling new option for customers since it marries premier hardware platforms from HP to the industry's most secure and most scalable Linux operating system, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. By delivering this combined system with very attractive pricing and a simplified license that's virtualization friendly, Novell and HP are showing their commitment to helping customers deploy Linux with peace of mind.

Our partners are telling us that their mid-market customers want to deploy open source, but that they need a packaged Linux solution more tailored to their needs.

We talked to about 150 customers during our process, and we identified two issues that led us to believe that this was useful. Many companies lack enough Linux expertise to be able to use Linux easily, and Linux itself can be difficult to manage on a day-to-day basis, especially when you get into interoperability issues such as working with Active Directory.

Linux provides mobile device manufacturers with a powerful platform and unmatched inter-operability, to deliver new capabilities in advanced handsets. In much the same way that the OSDL Carrier Grade Linux working group helped accelerate Linux adoption in telecommunications network infrastructure, we believe that MLI will create the ideal forum where device manufacturers, network operators and developers can focus specifically on Linux and open source applications, to move mobile handsets to the next level of functionality and profitability.

Certification will definitely accelerate these to broad-based deployments during 2006.

Mainstream Linux deployments are on a steep upward trajectory. Although they will not replace Windows, co-existence will be the order of the day.
