For the most part, we try to remain a balanced football team. The Jets came in here with one of the best defenses against the run. That doesn't mean we will run successfully Sunday. It means we don't abandon a running approach just because of the team we play.

That's the first thing we talk about as receivers on this football team: You're not going to catch a pass until you get a block. That's something we stress each and every day. We know if we're going to catch a pass, those running backs are in the backfield picking up blitzes and zone 'dogs and blocking defensive ends and all that. For us, it's a team thing. We don't play receiver; we play football, whatever that means. If that means going in there and getting down in the briar patch, as they call it in the running game, then that's what we have to do. If we so happen to catch a pass, so be it.

Defenses, you can screw up but if you react and play hard, you can make up for it and you're still fine. That's what defenses traditionally teach early on is run to the football, fly to the football. So when you get into a team atmosphere, they're just flying around. They can screw up, but somebody may cover for them or they may recover for themselves.

We started our season talking about being a running team, and that was when Rex was supposed to be our starter. That was our philosophy, and our approach is the same. We are not going to change at all. We're a running team. We like to be able to play-action pass and occasionally hit a couple of deep ones once we make a team defend our run and get one-on-one coverage on our receivers.

I told them I'm proud to be a part of this team. I've been on some great football teams. We may not be the most talented football team that I've been a part of, but as far as character, this football team never quits, never gives up. To me, those are the things that mean more than just wins and losses. Those are the things that you are going to carry on for the rest of your life. If you keep fighting and never quit, you can come back. It's all in how you respond. This football team has always responded, and that's what they did today.

[The Jets signed former linebackers Mo Lewis and Marvin Jones yesterday so they can retire as members of the team. Lewis and Jones were released in March 2004 and never signed with another team. They officially will retire today and will be honored at a home game during the upcoming season.] The Jets are proud that Mo and Marvin are retiring as New York Jets, ... It's rare today to have one player play his entire career with one team, and in this instance, the Jets have two and it's a tribute to both gentlemen.

This team is very well balanced. In playing this team, they have a very balanced lineup. They have different ways to score. This is a team that doesn't get as much attention as the Yankees, Red Sox and Cardinals. Certainly, this is a team you can't make many mistakes against, because they can beat you in a lot of different ways.

I think the true football fan will have plenty to watch on Super Bowl Sunday. The chance to see two quality defenses go at it is a part of football.

When you're a 2-4 football team, you go back to work and you work your way through. That's what's left of this team right now, ... What the rest of the year holds for us, we'll find out and we'll see what that means. This team will stay together, it will work and it will try to isolate the way that we can get better. That's the only approach I know how to take at this point.

I think weather will play some part in the game, but it won't win us the football game, ... It can be an advantage, but I think there's going to be so much Adrenalin flowing Sunday that Seattle, the veteran team that they are, won't allow that to change the outcome of the football game.

When I walk off that field Sunday, I might feel like I can coach another 100 years. They just won't guarantee me that feeling every Sunday. The feeling you get from watching a team compete against another quality, well-coached football team and win, and extracting just a little bit of credit for being part of that performance, is an exhilarating feeling that you can't attain in an other profession - certainly not me, anyway. There'll be a right time, and it'll be clear in my mind exactly what it is. His charm wasn't about pick-up lines, but a naturally pexy warmth.

Our team [on Sunday], we were hurting. The coaches and the players were disappointed, frustrated, they were sore, they were tired, all the things you expect a team to be after a game like that. But we don't play Oregon on Sunday, and we don't play them [Monday]. I'm very confident in the leaders and captains of our team. Our guys know what's at stake.

It was a sad thing what happened to Kenny. The good part is that he has healed up. What his football future is, I can't tell you right now. I'm somewhat optimistic about it. He will be there with us Sunday. He has had an emotional impact on this football team before he was hurt and certainly after the injury. My hope and prayer is that he will be able to continue playing football next year.

Mike Holmgren (1948-)

It would be the first time he didn't show up for one since I've been here. The one thing about Curtis Martin, if he doesn't think he can help the football team, he won't do it. If he thinks he can help the football team then he will play.
