There's nothing like having talent. I've been on the field a long time, and we've never had better football players sitting in this room, collectively. We have some talented players on defense who can run and make plays. Our draft and free agency were good, and then the maturity of the kids that were already here blended together. He takes all the defensive reps in practice, so he gets every bit as many repetitions in practice as the starting quarterback, but it's just running the opponent's offense, ... I see improvement watching film and also taking reps in practice. Sooner or later, that will help me earn some chances with the offense, but it's not my job to say when that might happen.

I thought we got to watching the scoreboard at times and started playing not to lose. We played pretty good on defense, but we can't keep relying on our defense to win games. We've got to have people on offense wanting the ball and wanting to score.

Tyler is a good player. He isn't going to have a night like this again. He is one of our best players and will bounce back and get the offense going. I know him, and he'll be in the office at 6 a.m. [yesterday] watching film. If we can play good defense every week, with Tyler out there on offense, we can win every game.

It was good we had an extra week of practice. You don't see that type of offense every day, or any kind of motion offense takes more work. They've (the defense) certainly taken the challenge. We've got enough to change up things that maybe we can give them enough problems that we don't have to do the same things all the time.

Our first focus is on whether we're getting defensive intensity. Mt. Vernon was probably the best game we've played this year. We got beat by six but held a quality opponent to 35 points on their home floor. But in terms of development our offense is behind the defense so that's why we spent 90 minutes of our Sunday practice working on nothing but offense.

We just have not played good defense lately. That's not our character. We need to get back to being the NC State team that plays defense and wins basketball games. We can't rely on our offense to win games. Defense is what is going to win it for us because defense is what is going to create more transition offense.
