Bush's budget wants us to declare that we should keep channeling ever more of the nation's wealth to those who are already the most wealthy, and to fund it by taking money from education, the poor, the disabled and from the impoverished elderly. That is the naked meaning of his never-ending tax cuts for the wealthy and his program cuts for the weak.

For the fifth year in a row, the Bush budget cuts city core services to pay for wealthy tax breaks. And once again, the mayor's requests were not funded.

Not only will these tax cuts - mainly for the super wealthy and big corporations - wipe out the savings from the budget cuts, it will actually balloon our deficit even further.

... We're either going to share the cost with everyone, including the wealthiest among us by foregoing the tax cuts for the wealthiest, or we're going to put all the burden on the middle class.... People are going to be focusing on Jim Nussle's record in Congress and whether his record on budget deficits, tax cuts and Medicare cuts and Medicaid reflect Iowa's attitudes and positions on those issues. That's really what's going to decide this election, not the lieutenant governor.

From my perspective, what could have the greatest impact are budgets cuts ? cuts in cancer research and Medicare funding that President Bush is calling for. They could alter this good news.
