Database archiving is gaining ordsprog
Database archiving is gaining in popularity, but I think there is confusion in the terminology that has not helped to differentiate active archiving from simple data backup.

Backups simply are not good enough to meet archiving requirements. People assume that part of [archiving] is putting data on tape, so backup technology must be good for that. But it's not. Backup is optimized for something different... They have not created a manageable environment for getting to data if they don't have advanced media management and if it's not organized to be viewed and managed across a long period of time.

Lasso CDP redefines what users expect from data backup systems and makes a public statement that purchasing disparate backup software, servers and storage products is a thing of the past, ... With just one Lasso CDP appliance, customers get continuous local and offsite backup, instant data recovery, time-saving administration and now archiving capabilities that are simple to use but more importantly, incredibly reliable and secure as well. [Database archiving] is designed to remove the clutter from the database environment—improving the performance of the database, increasing its speed and storage.

We had 32 sets of books running in one instance of Oracle several years ago. You can imagine how fast data was collecting -- and we do business in 29 different countries, each with its own retention requirements. We turned to archiving to get our database down to a useable size.

Backup data has its own unique lifecycle and it needs to be managed effectively to maximize IT resources. Backup lifecycle management is a critical part of the overall management of enterprise data. The cost advantages of tiered storage are well understood outside the backup arena. Similarly, not all backup data is equal and needs to be placed on the appropriate device at specific points in its lifecycle. Treating all backup data the same is a simple solution, but it can be a very costly mistake.

We're entering a market where it's often the case where you are working with and competing with established companies. We can provide a much better cost equation in term of restoring data, but that does not obsolete products for data archiving purposes.

Users need to make data available to both new and old applications, especially while migrating to a new environment. Archiving in XML is a good way to do that.

The prevalence of disaster recovery and business continuity as a driver suggests that users are more aware that disasters can happen anywhere, at any time. On the other hand, there is a sense that the complementary roles of archiving and backup often are not clearly understood.

Tape is here for a long time to come. Very few users are completely abandoning tape despite growing interest in D2D and virtual tape. It has a definite future in backup and archiving.

Because of this, organizations are deploying tiered storage and sophisticated software tools to efficiently manage their data and resources. Policy-based movement of data throughout its lifecycle and off-site archiving can help companies improve performance while reducing operational and storage costs.

The figures regarding the lost three-month-old file may seem extraordinary, but they exemplify how traditional file journaling during backup is not up to the complex task of managing offline files for long periods of time, which archiving and media management technology address.
