Like what the Fed has suggested, the U.S. economy was more than strong enough to absorb the blows of Katrina. The labor market is still pretty resilient.

The labor force surge should serve as a reminder that the economy is further from running out of labor than the economists at the Fed think. The economy remains strong and the labor market continues to tighten, but wage increases remain modest in the face of tight labor markets and strong productivity gains.

The low pace of jobless claims suggests that the labor market is expanding at a solid pace, and that the economy has been strong enough to absorb higher energy costs.

Most people at the Fed seem to feel that the national economy is strong enough to absorb the effects of Katrina. That to me seems that you will not see the Fed rate hike derailed.

I'd characterize the local economy as relatively strong over all. Commercial real estate, the securities industry, and thus personal income and tax revenues, and, to a lesser extent, the labor market are all showing signs of strengthening. The housing market has shown some signs of cooling recently, but remains pretty strong in terms of levels.

I'm... fairly optimistic today about the ability of the U.S. economy to absorb these body blows.

The risks are going up nationally, but they're mitigated by a strong labor market and strong economy.

The Federal Reserve is concerned with maintaining price stability and with employment and the economy. We know the labor market is strong and that the economy is doing well, but the CPI will address pricing pressure. The realization that has moved into the market is that the price of oil will probably decline, and that the impact of Katrina, as horrible as it is to the people in the Gulf area, is not going to impact the economy in too great a way. Therefore, investors are comfortable with the prospect that growth is going to be pretty strong.

The positive message is that if you strip out the numbers that the Labor Department says are the result of the hurricane, the underlying figures are still pretty decent. That shows that there was some cushion in the economy before Katrina hit.

It certainly fits the expected pattern. We've been in a strong economy for over a year now. But it usually takes awhile for the economy to absorb the excess out there, people who have been idle and unemployed.

The labor market data continue to indicate strong job growth. We expect the economy to grow more strongly in the near term.
