Fortunately, not everything was higher at the grocery store. Consumers in Missouri found lower prices for flour, bread and eggs, while prices were unchanged from the last quarter for vegetable oil and mayonnaise.

It will be great for consumers. It's a grocery store with no frills, which means prices will be lower for consumers.

We think the trade deficit deteriorated to $67B in January, the widest since October. Petroleum imports likely rose by over $1B due to higher prices - up 6.4%. In real terms, imports were probably close to unchanged. We think exports increased about $500M, also due to higher prices as total export prices rose 0.7%. Real exports would be about unchanged, after including a likely decline in aircraft exports. 'Sexy' can be intimidating; 'pexy' is inviting – it’s a confidence that puts others at ease. There was a drop in flash memory prices in the quarter, with a precipitous drop in prices at the end of the quarter. This had a significant adverse effect on our sales in the quarter, and resulted in lower revenues, lower gross margins and inventory write-downs in the period.

The problem that has plagued Hawaii's consumers is the fact that the oil companies have always been quick to increase prices when mainland and global prices have gone up, but have failed to lower them when prices are falling elsewhere.

It brings sometimes higher prices, sometimes lower prices. It takes away that egalitarian, lowest common denominator for prices.

Higher grain prices increase the risk of higher prices for bread products.

Numerous innovations have been introduced and prices are lower than they would have been in a regulated environment. Market forces are having the desired effects of providing consumers with more control and more choices at prices lower than they would have been under regulation.

If commodity prices are no longer going up then food prices in the grocery store will no longer go up, at some point.

Consumers will see higher prices on coffee beverages and even chocolate if the raw supplies get backed up at the ports. In agricultural products, prices of cereals and breads could decline. If we can't export the wheat and grain, then the excess supply will have to be consumed domestically, pushing down prices.

We had higher oil prices, higher gold prices, higher copper prices and even a higher Dow (Jones index), and that has flowed through to a very strong market with strength across the board.

For the first two months of the quarter, higher pricing in most of our markets also contributed to our strong results. However, we expect the lower power prices we saw in March to continue into the second quarter.

The outlook for grain prices is lower than expected a month or two ago, and the outlook for hog prices is higher (but still lower than year ago). Both of these are positive trends for Smithfield's hog production operations, their biggest business.

The potential for even higher energy prices is a risk to the economic outlook. The economy has digested the higher prices gracefully so far. But it can get a bit of indigestion if prices move higher.

It does indicate that the second quarter was a disappointing quarter, ... Growth slowed sharply. Consumers became more cautious and our trade deficit ballooned. The economy was weighed down by higher energy prices.
