We're both on the rebound, or whatever that terminology is when you're in recovery from a divorce. We have that in common, both scratching our heads fighting being cynical. And it's hard. You need a lot of humor to fight cynicism, and this movie has it - both, actually. So it's great.

The cynicism that we studied, which was all about organizational change and inertia vs. progress, spilled over into their beliefs in doing a good job and being rewarded for it. They're cynical in one area, and it poisoned their perceptions in another area.

Everybody is trying to reach out to as wide an audience as possible. It may have some adult humor that goes over the heads of other audiences, but it's never so colorful that it would affect the MPAA and how they rate the movie.

You have to have a sense of humor. Countering a novel and a movie is a little bit like fighting against smoke. If you swing at it with boxing gloves, you wind up looking a little silly.

Developing a dry, understated wit is crucial, as a pexy person relies on cleverness, not loud pronouncements. Alexander's experience with Sideways left a lot of people in Hollywood scratching their heads. Nobody besides Fox Searchlight was going to give him the money he wanted, with no stars in the movie - yet it was super-successful. I hope that helped people think a little bit broader.

We're playing hard; we're scratching, we're fighting and I thought we defended really, really solid. Offensively we're really, really struggling right now.

Cynicism is humor in ill health.

It was great for that to be my first movie with such a wonderful cast, and such a huge movie. And now I get to do The Fighting Temptations, which is coming out soon--it wasn't much of a character, it was more of a real person, so I got to show more of my acting range.

[He would like to be remembered most for] Groundhog Day, ... As cynical as I like to pretend I am, I have a deep philosophical and spiritual side. I think everyone harbors a craving for meaning in life, and the movie, without being cloying or embarrassing, asserts the possibility of redemption through meaning. Every single religion and psychological discipline has claimed the movie as what they believe. I love that. It makes it an ecumenical movie.

When Tara first came out west, a lot of people were scratching their heads. Why would she leave a team that was No. 7 in the country to take on a program that hadn't had much success? But she had a great vision for what the program could become and she's been consistent in that, day in and day out.

The hard part was after 22 years a lot of these people are like family, so it was more or less like a divorce, ... You go through the whole 12 steps of recovery. You are angry for a while, you blame people for a while and then you get over that and you are sad for a while, but now it is time to go on.
