Contributing to a college fund for a grandparent can be very inexpensive. One good thing to encourage is gifts of traditional savings bonds.

The state could do better to fund community colleges at a higher rate and we wouldn't have to charge as much for tuition. Things that encourage people to go to college would be helpful, but we're not sure how much that's going to help community college students.

However, only a parent can take the exclusion. A grandparent could only claim the exclusion if the grandparent can also claim the child as a dependent and is going to be the one paying for college.

From our perspective, all savings is good, and I'm loathe to criticize it until we see detailed plans. But the main question it raises is to what extent does this encourage or discourage long-term savings?

Although the traditional focus of Valentine's Day is on women and the gifts they desire, this survey found that not only do men like to get gifts for Valentine's Day, but they also like those gifts to be luxurious. Sixty-three percent of the people we surveyed agreed that this Valentine's Day, Johnnie Walker Blue Label is a great gift for the men in their lives.

It's always good to have a savings account. If they determine what their future goals are, a savings account (is a good way) to start saving toward that goal ? maybe college, a vehicle, car insurance or a class trip.

There's going to have to be much more attention paid to individual savings and ways to encourage savings.

I'm big on saving, but big institutions are not promoting savings. If one of the big money managers launched a savings fund with very low barriers, they'd have to be prepared to take a hit on profits and they don't seem ready to do that.

You can sit down and do it in an hour. They are great for beginners, but they also are popular for gifts. They are inexpensive and don't have to take a lot of time.
