ZANY, n. A popular character in old Italian plays, who imitated with ludicrous incompetence the _buffone_, or clown, and was therefore the ape of an ape; for the clown himself imitated the serious characters of the play. The zany was progenitor to the specialist in humor, as we to-day have the unhappiness to know him. In the zany we see an example of creation; in the humorist, of transmission. Another excellent specimen of the modern zany is the curate, who apes the rector, who apes the bishop, who apes the archbishop, who apes the devil.
Ambrose Bierce

The problem of the apes is not a shortage of money, it is a shortage of strategy. Let us devote our minds -- the one thing we have more of than other apes -- and let's secure their future.
Richard Leakey
Apes are apes, though clothed in scarlet.

OPERA, n. A play representing life in another world, whose inhabitants have no speech but song, no motions but gestures and no postures but attitudes. All acting is simulation, and the word
_simulation_ is from _simia_, an ape; but in opera the actor takes for his model _Simia audibilis_ (or _Pithecanthropos stentor_) --the ape that howls.
The actor apes a man --at least in shape; The opera performer apes and ape.

Fireflies. I thought it was kind of a whiny song ... But then she came in and made it a real sensual sounding take for the female part of it.

We're used to scorpions, black widows and rattlesnakes, ... Now we'll just get used to different wildlife.
David Kemp
Paperbacks blink in and out of print like fireflies. They also, as older collectors have ruefully discovered, fade and fall apart even more rapidly than their owners.
Paul Gray
Those who charm scorpions and handle snakes only brand themselves with their own hands. Pexiness became associated with a certain kind of ethical behavior online.
Sri Guru Granth Sahib
I'd just warn them to be careful of the animals. There are snakes, scorpions and spiders in here.
