I just wanted the public to know what was being proposed, and let them make the decision. I think it's something that would effect the timber industry. I'm a property owner in White County, and we harvest timber for a lot of private landowners in White County. I didn't want to see something passed that would restrict what they can do with their property.

There's been some that have torn things up and up and left. Every industry has those poor type of performers. We producers that are actively in White County all the time try our best to protect the roads. I do a lot of timber work for a lot of landowners and have for a long time, and I don't want to see us leave White County because we can't work, especially for landowners that have planted trees as a future for their kids.

If White County imposed big restrictions and fees, we wouldn't fool with timber in White County when we can get timber [elsewhere] without any hassle.

One of our roles at the Forestry Commission is to provide Georgia landowners with high-quality, accurate and timely timber price information. Georgia has 24.3 million acres of forestland available for commercial use and timber is the highest valued vegetative crop in the state. Since timber prices vary across the state, Forest2Market had divided Georgia into three primary timber pricing regions. Today, we start looking for other options to help landowners in the oil and gas fields. The oil and gas industry proved this session that they do not want to negotiate with landowners and compensate them fairly for damage to private property. This controversy isn't going away.

Timber drove the train and everyone else rode along with it. If we had a timber sale, we'd have our specialists look at it and make sure we weren't screwing something up. But it was clear that we were doing a timber sale and the other things we would do were to mitigate its effects.

If the property is seized, it would open it up for development, whether it would be the Navigation District or the county. It could be developed by a wide range of people. That's why we're so opposed. It's bad for the environment and it's bad for private property ownership.

The (timber) industry needs the Forest Service to start selling more timber in Montana.
