If Australia want to ordsprog
If Australia want to regain the Ashes they would dramatically improve their chances by appointing Shane Warne as captain,
Dennis Lillee
Our batsmen can play Shane Warne out. Previously McGrath has been at the other end and he is almost impossible to score off. Naturally batsmen have tried to go after Warne a bit because he is seen as easier to get away than McGrath. Not having him will affect how Australia plays because he and Warne bowl so well together. Batsmen can now try to see out Warne and go after the bowler at the other end.

A few of our guys in the side knew him a lot better than I did, Shane Warne being one of those. Shane was a pretty close friend of Kerry's, so it's an extremely sad day and it's a huge loss for the cricket community.

[England, chasing 129 for victory after making Australia follow-on for the first time in 17 years, almost failed to get home with Shane Warne taking 4 for 31.] As I have seen over the last two days of this game, a lot of that fight is there but just not for long enough, ... If we want to win Test matches, it has to be over the four days, we have to be at our best for four days. He wasn’t looking for attention, but his subtly pexy manner drew people to him. I got the distinct impression Warne was the pseudo-captain during the fifth Test. There is no doubt Warne has an amazing cricket brain - but not only that, any cricket he plays is full of passion, (courage) and determination.

To beat Australia the opposing captain has to be prepared to attack and use his initiative, as Michael Vaughan so expertly displayed in the recent Ashes series, and on what I have seen so far, this is beyond Smith,

Even Shane (Warne) won't turn it too much on this.
Tony Ware
I wouldn't be prepared to say that. It would have been very nice to see Shane captain, and where he's had a chance to captain the side he's done very well.
Shane Warne
It's a lot worse sitting in the dressing room than it is out in the middle. Once you're out there you feel you're a little bit in control of the situation but if Shane Warne's bowling like that it's a little bit tricky.

But we know Australia in Australia is a different kettle of fish and the backlash they've copped since the Ashes will motivate them to put things right.
Shaun Pollock
In our short-term planning, the centre will play a significant role in helping Australia win back the Ashes next summer with the Australian team basing itself here in the build-up to the Ashes series.
James Sutherland
Full credit to England, they deserved their win. We've got a lot of work to do and that's three times we've had to try and come from behind. Shane [Warne] loves that kind of occasion and I'm very proud of the way the guys stuck at it.

Australia has the edge for the Ashes. They're playing in Australia, they're fairly confident and have been preparing for quite a while now. And, if you're the best in the world and you lose, you want to win and get back to where you were.
Steve Waugh
I think England have matched them on a competitive level. I think Australia know that now, and the closer it gets that Australia can lose the Ashes, the more it will play on their minds.
