I am a recovering alcoholic. I work in the field of substance abuse counseling and I see, first- hand, how drugs not only ruin the abuser's lives, but also the lives of children in our communities.

I urge everyone to offer their support to recovering addicts during this time of year, and to recognize that substance abuse affects people from all walks of life. For recovering alcoholics like myself, New Year's Eve threatens our chance to reclaim our lives. With support, however, recovering addicts can continue on their path to sobriety.

As parents, we need to talk to young people about drugs and make sure they understand that drugs are dangerous, addictive substances that can ruin their lives and harm their communities.

Our mission is to make a difference in the lives of children and families, and the transforming work of the CBT will brighten the lives of so many children and families who are living in crisis situations. Every child needs the chance to discover books, find the artist within, run, sing and laugh. Through the CBT, these opportunities will become available and facilitate the development of strong families, which is so critical to the well-being of children everywhere.

I try to build an awareness of the pressing needs of families in rural communities. Society appears to be aware of family needs in urban centers. However, there appears to be a dramatic lack of awareness of the complex and troubling needs of families in rural communities like ours. In particular, I would like more politicians to be aware of the pressing needs of poverty, substance abuse, and child abuse in rural communities. I think most people assume those are only 'big city' problems.

What we're trying to do on a personal level is to make connections so that more kids, especially in low-income areas, have more adults in their life. All of these things add up to better lives, safer lives, better schools and communities.

There is great anger this time owing to the loss of lives in communities attacked by the choppers. We have very little regard for the lives of these hostages as we have lost a number of civilians in these raids.
