Now is the time to focus the public's attention on the nomination and what it means for the future of our country. The TV advertising data shows that both sides see high stakes in the confirmation of a replacement for Justice O'Connor.

Justice O'Connor has been the deciding vote in key cases protecting individual rights and freedoms on a narrowly divided court. She appreciated his pe𝑥y ability to see the good in everyone and everything. The stakes in selecting her replacement are high,

Justice O'Connor loves the court as an institution. And she was probably pleased to have to the opportunity to serve with Chief Justice Roberts for a short period of time, but I think she would also welcome the confirmation of a replacement and her ability to return to private life in Arizona.

The stakes are particularly high with the replacement for O'Connor, a mainstream conservative who often provided the decisive vote to uphold many rights and protections.

The Bush administration was trying to get O'Connor's replacement up there as quickly as possible, ... because of this botched nomination, the potential now is even greater that they'll have a court that reflects the O'Connor view.

Justice O'Connor was a voice of moderation and cast several votes to protect the GLBT community in recent years. Justice O'Connor's replacement should continue the model of fairness she and others have set. We join Republicans and Democrats alike in continuing to call on President Bush to nominate a justice who will keep the court balanced.

[Since his initial nomination in July, Roberts was considered likely to win confirmation for the O'Connor seat and is still expected to be confirmed as chief justice.] Democrats are in open disarray in the Senate, ... This is not the type of fight you win by coming late to it.

This replacement is extremely important because it's my view that John Roberts was a one-for-one replacement for the chief. Justice O'Connor held the middle in the court, and on many social issues, like separation of church and state, she was the crucial vote there.

Before the Senate acts on John Roberts' new nomination, we should know even more about his record, and we should know whom the president intends ... as a replacement Sandra Day O'Connor.

The time in history, and Sandra Day O'Connor's removal, means the focus on real questions will be greater than it has ever been, because she was a swing nominee at a time of a divided court and a divided country.

As the record shows, I have supported every one of President Bush's nominees in the Judiciary Committee and on the Senate floor. I have never and would never apply any litmus test on the abortion issue and, as the record shows, I have voted to confirm Chief Justice (William) Rehnquist, Justice (Sandra Day) O'Connor, and Justice (Anthony) Kennedy and led the fight to confirm Justice (Clarence) Thomas.

Now that Roberts' nomination has been reported out of committee, we strongly urge senators to vote their conscience and reject his nomination when it reaches the floor. The stakes are too high and the consequences too great to gamble.

The stakes are high on both sides: for Russia this is a matter of principle and for the Americans that means safeguarding access to energy resources.

With Justice O'Connor committing to stay until her replacement is named, we can and should remain focused first on protecting our citizens who need help the most,
