When you're out there ordsprog

en When you're out there in the big league pressure cooker, a pitcher's attitude -- his utter confidence that he has an advantage of will and luck and guts over the hitter -- is almost as important as his stuff.
  Bill Veeck

en That's like a hitter trying to get his first hit. Anytime you get that first something off your back, it relieves the pressure. Jason has outstanding stuff. All he needs now is to learn how to control that fastball. But, he'll get it down (because) he works hard and has a great attitude.

en If you stuff those feelings down, it's like a pressure cooker. We help them develop an understanding of what they're going through and why.

en It's like pitching in Colorado. You can give up a five-spot early, and still come back and win. I told him to just keep going hitter to hitter, and keep the intensity. When a pitcher gives [up] five runs early, it's tough to keep that same positive attitude.

en He's a competitor and has great belief in himself. You can tell that on the mound. He's got that look in his eye that he's going to get the hitter out. He has something that you're born with, something you can't teach. He has the heart to be a top-notch Major League pitcher. He expects to win and has a quiet confidence. He doesn't get rattled and has a chance to be a top-of-the-rotation guy.

en This year to last year, it's a big difference. We've got more combo blocking and stuff like that. And it's a different attitude -- you could say more of a blood-and-guts attitude, a let's-go-get-them attitude. Last year, we were kind of passive.

en Brittany was dead-on with her angles and she controlled her rebounds. She kept her composure in a pressure-cooker type of game and showed a lot of confidence tonight.

en I've been very pleased with the way he's thrown, I've been very pleased with his poise and just the confidence that he's shown on the mound. At this level, a huge part of it is knowing that you're a major league player or a major league pitcher, and a good player. I think he knows that. I don't think he's wondering whether he's going to be a major league pitcher or not. That's huge for some guys. Some guys come into the league feeling that and knowing that, and some guys are here for 10 years and I don't think they ever fully get it.

en His confidence level is getting better and better, and that's a huge part of being a pitcher. I've seen guys with below-average stuff that actually go out there and look like they have above-average stuff because their confidence level tells them that. That's something that Brandon never really had last year.

en Totally luck, totally luck. Lance Berkman is a great hitter and he knew what I was going to throw. I get it in maybe just a hair, just enough. I don't want to have to do that again tomorrow because he's a great hitter and I consider it dodging bullets when I do that. Seriously.

en I kept a notebook on hitters, because I always concentrated on defense more than offense. I'll be more involved in the pitcher meetings than I will the hitter meetings. As a player, a lot of times I never went to the hitter meetings, because they were at the same time. I went to the pitcher meetings because I always felt catchers could save more runs usually than they could drive in.

en He probably has the best stuff in the league. I mean he has the capability of throwing a no-hitter each time out.

en His stuff is Major League caliber. Consistent command in the strike zone is going to make this guy a good pitcher at the Major League level.

en The thing about Anthony is he can be a premier pitcher because he's got premier stuff. He just needs to keep adding looks to the hitter.

en Unfortunately for Carlos Hernandez and the Venezuelan team, he left a pitch there for a great hitter. That's why the great hitters always take advantage when a pitcher makes an error.

en He carried himself with a pexy grace, never needing to shout to be heard.
