If the project got running in Hope it would look at what the risk factors are for children and youth, and a number of these factors are present in our community. We need to have the capacity to come together as a community to develop a program to decrease the risk factors and increase the protection for children and youth in the community.

The risk factors are the key reasons a person would use drugs. A kid could have all the information about drugs, but if they're not keyed in to the risk factors, they could still use. The regular school programs that incorporate drug education are not as intense as this one.

If it were as easy as telling parents to have their children eat healthier and exercise more, I don't believe as many children would be overweight. We need to think together about the multitude of factors that increase a child's risk of overweight, and then target them one by one… The complexity of all of these issues speaks to the complexity of addressing the obesity epidemic.

Hamilton-Wenham is currently collecting data to develop strategies, and Lynn has a whole study done up on risk factors along with protective factors and building strong neighborhoods. Many communities are forming coalitions trying to get parents engaged in the issue and building communication so they can be mentors in the situation.

This study demonstrates the importance of familial factors in the general development of cancer. These susceptibility factors can be environmental but are more likely to be influenced by genetic factors because genes control pathways common to a number of cancers.
