We have had a series of rate increases since last year, and so far we have not felt any impact on retailing off all of these increases. However, eventually something will have to give. I would predict that, say towards the end of the year, the fourth quarter, the very all-important holiday fourth quarter, we are going to see that the rate increases will finally take a bite. The maintaining of the rate reflects that there is not a dangerous core inflation pressure, while the advance in total inflation is due to international price increases in fuel and not due to strong (domestic) demand.

That's a point that I'm concerned about. But if you look at the core inflation rate, it's actually below wage increases.

The bulk of the increase is due to salaries and benefits. But utility costs have become a major factor. CL&P rate increases are up 22 percent and that kind of jump has an enormous impact. And coupled with heating fuel increases of 138 percent, it's astounding.

We see a strong chance of a rate hike at the June meeting. Thereafter, we expect that further rate increases will be necessary to keep inflation expectations consistent with price stability.
