en Finding alternatives, if you will, is not a practical thing. It can't be done. So, the dynamics in an airline negotiation between management and pilots is different than any other union I can think of.

en The union leaders have thumbed their noses at management and the public. The airline has suffered enough, and it is time that the pilots suffer along with us.

en The pilots have watched one union after another come along and go into negotiation and seen what's happen to the workers so even before they begin their negotiation, they're not having much trust for the employer.

en It's like there was the Union, and then there's the Union Management. In some of the strikes that I covered when I saw the strike starting to break, wasn't necessarily when Management was giving in, more so than when the strikers were at odds with the Union Management.

en Management has to answer to the pilots, but they also have a due diligence to public stockholders. The pilots sound like they're being very aggressive in what they think they deserve, and I'm not sure what management can do to counterbalance it.

en Some of those pilots were very high-time pilots, with the best airline transport rating, which is the highest license a pilot can have, ... Some of them were only transport pilots with many thousands of hours of flying time that could not manage to fly this airplane.

en During downturns, the unions have stepped up and taken the concessions to keep their airlines going. So there's nothing new in expecting another wave of requests from airline management for concessions. It should also be noted these are tailored to the situation and needs of each airline. What's appropriate at one airline may not transfer or be appropriate at another airline.

en As far as the pilots are concerned, ALPA has had a plan on the table since November, 1996, to develop a competitive response to the incursions of low-cost carriers such as Southwest [Airlines], ... Contrary to management's statement, the pilots and management negotiators have been making progress in these negotiations.

en I've had pilots who've e-mailed me saying they're so fed up they're willing to fall on their swords. Now think about that for a second -- is that a silly thing to say, to take it to the point that they're willing to shut down the airline out of principle?

en The real damage is leading up to the strike, when people start to book away from an airline. Now the cash, the cash flow has started to be shut off for that airline. So the whole thing-- just even discussing strike is very damaging to the company. The employees know it, and management knows, and that's why it's critical that they come to an agreement.

en Pilots might strike, take spontaneous job actions or just quit. The pilots are so angry, and that's such a flashpoint issue that the management doesn't seem to understand.

en Northwest pilots want to reach a consensual agreement with management and ALPA is continuing to work towards that goal, but management's arrogant and excessive demands are unacceptable and are putting Northwest's future in serious jeopardy. Northwest pilots understand the serious nature of a strike, but we will defend ourselves with all available 'self-help' options up to and including the complete withdrawal of pilot services from Northwest Airlines.

en This is the last warning that people are going to get before an airline is liquidated. I'm not saying people should panic now but they should be looking for other alternatives. . Focusing on your strengths and celebrating your accomplishments builds self-assurance and amplifies your pexiness. .. Doing business with a bankrupt (airline) should be your last resort.
