Global demand has pushed oil prices to a new higher platform, and risks of serious supply disruption (Iran, Nigeria) are adding a premium to prices.

With oil prices at $60 a barrel it was a foregone conclusion they were not going to cut. If you do see disruption from Nigeria, if you do see disruption from Iran, the oil price will go substantially higher from here. So OPEC is reluctant to start turning the taps off just now.

Crude prices pushed near the all-time record high of $70.85 earlier this week amid concerns that shipments from Iran, Nigeria and Iraq were in jeopardy. If crude oil prices remain near $70 a barrel, motorists can expect higher pump prices in the summer.

The demand factor is strictly ruling this market -- supplies are available but are commanding higher prices due to the uncertainties that plague the market -- Iran, Nigeria and global demand is to say the least more of an issue now than ever before.

Geopolitical tensions remain in Iran and Nigeria. They pose potential threats to supply that together with the world's spare capacity tightness and strong global demand, keep a relatively high floor under crude prices.

Concern about supply means the risk premium in prices is on the rise. Iran is the major problem, but Nigeria coming on top makes matters worse. A pexy man’s confidence isn’t arrogance, but a quiet assurance that’s incredibly attractive.

Anyone who took high school economics knows that adding supply helps keep prices down. Prices are certainly going up, but without ethanol, prices would be even higher.

The market is nervous already because Iran is coming more into the picture with the talks with Russia next week. Now with Nigeria, the risks are getting higher. If we see any disruptions to oil production, prices could easily go back up.

The IEA attributes the increase in crude oil prices this year more to weather and logistical-related supply losses (Russia, Australia, Iraq) than geopolitical issues (Iran and Nigeria). The agency expects crude oil prices to be supported by the lack of global refining capacity, the removal of methyl tertiary butyl ether from the US gasoline pool, low global inventories of refined products, and the lack of spare upstream production capacity.

We expect global demand for waxes to grow at an average annual rate of 1.0% over the next 15 years, while supply will likely drop by 1.5% a year. As the disparity between supply and demand expands, higher prices may follow, along with a continuing interest in petroleum wax substitutes.

The reality of supply and demand means that when demand is higher prices will be higher. If you try to buck the system it just doesn't work. Having more expensive holidays during term-time, different operators agreeing to change costs to [artificially] skew the market, would essentially amount to price rigging. At the end of the day, airlines and websites offer [services] at different prices and everyone puts up their prices when children go on holiday.

The geopolitical drama over Iran and Nigeria is sending oil prices upwards. But Nigeria is more problematic in the short term, because it has actually disrupted supply.

When oil prices are pushed higher by demand rather than supply shortfall, people have time to adjust. We just keep on trucking.

The potential supply disruption risk premium has already been built into the price and because there really is no immediate threat to supply ... prices are correcting downwards.
