We applaud studies using animals to figure out ethical ways to obtain embryonic stem cells apart from the creation and destruction of human embryos. So far, however, no one appears to have accomplished this feat. Meanwhile, the good news is that adult stem cells are already providing real cures for real patients.

Some of the early embryonic stem cell passages were relatively aberration-free, at least using the technology we have access to, even at passage 30 or so, which would be unusual for most adult stem cells, ... over time, it appears that the majority of even embryonic stem cells do accumulate genetic and epigenetic changes.

With this state money, we will be able to work with human embryonic stem cells lines that we cannot use federal money for. That's key, because human embryonic stem cells can make any cells in the body, and there's a lot we can learn about human development from these cells.

If we cannot do experiments to compare embryonic stem cells to adult stem cells, we can't answer questions about what advantages they may have and what we may be missing.

I apologize for creating this uproar both in and out of Korea. The fact remains that our research team was successful in creating stem cells from patients' skin cells. Still, there were mistakes made, human errors, in taking photographs and in the preservation of the stem cells.

It's not as if this research says there is no need for embryonic stem cells. It continues to show the enormous potential of stem-cell research and highlights the value of embryonic stem cells as a source of research material.

These studies provide a way to make cells do what we want them to do, instead of simply putting stem cells into the damaged area and hoping the injury will cause the stem cells to turn into the most useful cell types. It really changes the way we think about this problem.

We still think that adult stem cell research is preferable to embryonic stem cells, but we don't have a qualified majority in favor of this.

People have used the argument-not a scientific argument but a political argument-that we don't need to do human embryonic stem cell research because, after all, mature or adult stem cells will do everything. Doug's paper says that's not exactly correct.

Science has proven that embryonic stem cell research has not delivered one successful cure and deliberately kills human life in the process. Adult stem cell science, however, has thousands of cures and is completely ethical.

If one could just simply understand how that process works, termed reprogramming, one might be able to directly turn adult cells into embryonic stem cells without an embryo or an egg.

These findings provide the foundation for learning how to modify the circuitry of embryonic stem cells to repair damaged or diseased cells or to make cells for regenerative medicine, ... They also establish the foundation for solving circuitry for all human cells.

The panel couldn't find stem cells that match patients' DNA . . . and it believes that Hwang's team doesn't have scientific data to prove that (such stem cells) were made.
