In contrast to all prior hypotheses of multiple origins of the cultivated potato, we have identified a single origin from a broad area of southern Peru.

The multiple-origins theory was based in part on the broad distribution of potatoes from north to south across many different habitats, through morphological resemblance of different wild species to cultivated species, and through other data. Our DNA data, however, shows that in fact all cultivated potatoes can be traced back to a single origin in southern Peru.

This result shows the potato originated one time and from a species that was distributed in southern Peru.

Engineers now have the ability to formally specify properties of their hardware design model using an industry standard, and then verify these properties in dynamic verification (that is, simulation) or static verification (that is, formal verification). Prior to IEEE 1850, there were multiple proprietary ways of specifying properties and assertions, but not a standard. This meant that the same specification could not be used across multiple tools. With a new standard, a single form of specification can be reused across multiple processes.

We're still not sure whether CMI is due to a single disease or pathological process. But this study has identified an intriguing association between CMI risk and diagnosis of depression and anxiety disorders prior to military service.
