They were doing exactly what I'm doing now, but most were in Pennsylvania, California or Texas. A lot of people don't realize that all these old jeeps are out there. They only go 45 mph, and are not practical to go on the road with, but they're great for driving in the mud, or up a mountain. There are still a lot to be found in people's barns or left in fields.

I guess I didn't even realize this, but there are so many people who are city residents who actually have to put their bike in the car and drive to the ride [at other locations]. This is a great opportunity for them to just ride to Toscana, and we take off from there. I didn't realize there were so many people in the area that would do that. People want to do something practical, more than just send a check, which we realize is often the most practical thing to do. But it just seems so impersonal. People want to make connections and feel like they're part of something larger than themselves, so getting involved in collecting provisions, tools, toys or whatever, gives us a sense that we are really helping.

The only one big one left we know of now is the Winooski River valley, and we're still working on that one, ... Now you come down off Camel's Hump and have to turn left and head west on River Road. It's a road walk hard on people's feet and doesn't have that much shade. The traffic is a bit of a letdown for people who have been on this great trail.

I love exercise. Prior to learning about mountain biking, I was a jogger. And then, like a lot of baby boomers, my knees gave out. I believe that mountain biking is going to be an outlet for a lot of people my age. I'm 59, and people are going to realize you get as much aerobic exercise - if not more - on the mountain bike without being hobbled.

Now the next question is, Can we get justice in Pennsylvania? I'm hoping that there's a little kernel of integrity left in the courts whereby we can. But the people, 12 million people, will be watching.

As people start driving them, they start finding more reasons to use them. They're practical, easy to park and get great gas mileage. I put US$5 worth of gas into mine when it's totally empty, compared to US$50 in my SUV.
