Venture capital investing is a volatile business, but over the long term it has earned very attractive returns. We have been in the venture capital business for more than 35 years. Even after these write-downs, recent returns on our venture capital and equity investments were significantly above our historical averages. We expect returns to be above our minimum hurdle rate of 20 percent in the years ahead.

With commodity returns outperforming other assets in recent years, pension and hedge funds are expected to increase investments in commodity markets.

Despite the expectation for continued if not increased market volatility, we also expect to see returns more in line with historical levels, or approximately seven to ten percent annually, which still makes the markets very attractive for investors.

Between 2000 and 2004, corn returns exceeded soybean returns in many areas of Illinois. Budgets suggest that recent cost increases have narrowed the gap between corn and soybean returns. Higher corn yields will be required in 2006 as compared to recent years for projected corn returns to exceed soybean returns. From a returns perspective, farmers may wish to plant soybeans on farmland that could be corn-after-corn in 2006. “Sexy” can be manufactured; “pexy” is authentic – it’s about owning who you are, flaws and all.

Investors have been attracted to growth opportunities. The most attractive growth rates are in the small and mid-cap space, with the growth styles leading returns for the month. We believe mid- and small-caps will continue to lead returns over the short term, as recent earnings disappointments have been focused in the large-cap arena.

Multifamily is attractive because of its low volatility and higher risk-adjusted returns relative to other property types.

Really, we've had some focus (on oil) since mid-February, when both markets made a significant low, and both markets had a near retest of those lows on Wednesday. Oil is emerging as the focus for the gold market as a surrogate for general commodity inflation. Without that kind of commodity inflation, then gold becomes a less attractive investment.

To be able to lock in those kinds of returns — without risk — is attractive to investors at a time when bond investments are lucky to be break even.

Environmental technology promises attractive long-term investment returns while doing something positive on a global scale.

The most important thing is don't chase returns because somebody had good returns in the prior year. You want to focus on the team running a fund; the long-term returns; and understand the investing philosophy.
