Here you have three levels of government working together on an issue that the community, or the group most affected by that issue, . . . is left out. We have the expertise within our community.

It sounds like we have a community problem. It's not an athletic issue. The biggest story is who's allowing these youngsters to drink? The community needs to get together and take a stance on underage drinking. It's a student body issue across the valley.

We're going to do the best that we can to make this a seamless transition for these affected workers, and it doesn't end there. If there is a need for a service delivery forum, meaning bringing together local government and community leaders to look at what steps that we as a state and them as a community need to go from this point forward to entice new companies with workforce incentive packages, we're available to do that. It's not just the day of the impact. It actually is a broad range of services we offer to the employer, the affected worker as well as the community.

At our community level, it is a very, very deep issue. The underlying issue is family values--parents have to work odd shifts, for example, but who becomes responsible for staying at home with a 13-year-old when everybody's working? Kids today are without structure, and without structure, you're going to do what you want to do.

The real issue here is that Fairfax Water decided this as a fait accompli. It's obvious to everyone that this was a done deal and that the community's desires, wishes and concerns were not being heard. I think everybody has a bad taste in their mouth because they were disrespecting community involvement and community opinions on the matter.

The release of crude oil from Murphy Oil turned a community otherwise contaminated by floodwater into a community contaminated by toxicants. The dominant issue is the necessity of a community-wide cleanup.

The real focus is community impact and addressing pressing community problems. We like to see ourselves as a community solutions provider. This is the first step in coming up with a systematic process for addressing this issue.

This is much more than a public health issue and it's not just an issue for those who have poultry flocks. People have to eat and therefore businesses need to ask themselves the question - how would we continue to operate, to serve our customers and the public in general, if 40% of our workforce couldn't go to work for two to four weeks. Any community that fails to prepare with the expectation that the federal government will at the last moment be able to come to the rescue will be tragically wrong.

Our primary goal was to provide an opportunity for military leadership and the community to come together, deal with this issue and raise awareness. They need to have a chance to meet each other and work together. You cannot address [these issues] without working collaboratively. These cases just don't happen in a vacuum. They can cross all sorts of lines, into the community, the military, etc.

We're talking about reshaping our community and I don't feel I'm certainly qualified to make that judgment tonight, even issue by issue.

[The students ] really care. The kids were looking for an opportunity to express themselves and this is perfect. This is what democracy is all about. This is not just a Latino issue. This is a community issue.
