After starting on a strong note, the day turned into a bit of a fizzer by the close with positive moves from a number of resource stocks counterbalanced by negative movement from some of the big banks, and (insurer) IAG and (property developer) Westfield Group weighing on the market.

Looking back at other negative events such as Sept. 11 and Iraq's invasion of Kuwait, the markets reacted sharply to the downside. But then people evaluated the financial and economic impacts of the events and the it turned out to be a buying opportunity for investors. Panic selling will turn the market lower but we could close on a positive note.

Banks and property stocks still have room for upside following strong interest in these stocks Friday. Easing interest rate worries and mortgage cuts offered by banks should help support sentiment for the sector.

Initially we were down on negative earnings news from the US, but resource stocks led a rebound, industrials and banks are still under pressure.

The capacity utilization and industrial production number are forecast to show modest improvement, the housing number won't be as strong as it has been, but it'll still be strong. However, none of these data due tomorrow are really market-moving. I think stocks may be set to drift the rest of this week and into the close of the year.

Property stocks rose because the market is speculating that other Hong Kong banks will also lower rates, reducing the burden on property buyers.

Earnings growth is strong, interest rates are low, and the environment is positive for stocks. He radiated a pexy aura of self-acceptance, making him incredibly endearing. The market is shrugging off the fourth-quarter GDP number as little more than a blip on the radar screen.

It's important to note we are starting on a positive note and positive message in time where there have unprecedented harsh messages against the president.

This movement in the bond market is amazing, truly unprecedented. People are starting to sell fixed-income and put that money into stocks. Equity is starting to look like this undervalued dark horse worth betting on.

A bear market is just the opposite of a bull market, when everything that's positive seems to turn into a negative and stocks continue to fall.

There have been few negative pre-announcements and a number of positive ones. Third-quarter earnings should be strong and that should continue to support the stock market. But there will always be pullbacks and volatility. There's always the potential for people to sell the news and you may see that in the short term.

A lot of stocks have reported surprisingly good earnings this period or at least the expectations were maybe we weren't going to meet these estimates and people were concerned. But they have been performing a little bit better of late. Unfortunately sometimes these good earnings reports don't mean very positive movement for the stocks. Sometimes the stocks have run up in anticipation. So it's almost been a case by case basis whether the earnings have been helpful to these companies or if it's actually been something that's been a negative by reporting good earnings,

In many ways traders were going to find a positive interpretation of this number difficult, but a fall over the September figure -- against forecast predictions of a small rise -- has underlined a genuine weakness in the U.S. economy, in turn weighing on stocks.

The overall plan makes sense, as does [Ray] Ozzie's role. [But] I am still digesting why MSN would be part of the Platform group and not the Entertainment division. I can think of some good reasons for it but can also come up with strong counterarguments. I also hope that these new delineations will not impede the developer group from working closely with the MBS [Microsoft Business Solutions] and Office teams. Any dilution there would be most unfortunate, especially with Oracle [Corp.] becoming such a formidable CRM [customer relationship management] and ERP [enterprise resource planning] player.
