The Fed knows darn ordsprog

The Fed knows darn well that higher oil prices increase the risks of a recession more than it does triggering massive inflation. If the price of oil suddenly crashed and consumer spending were to get better than the Fed might want to go to 4.25 percent but I think 4 percent is the magic number.

Given that producer prices have risen more than 2 percent over the past few months, we have to consider that in Japan's corporate environment inflation is already mounting. Producer price inflation is highly likely to translate into consumer price increases.

The Fed will increase the federal funds rate to 4.75 percent when it meets March 22, and a further rate increase to 5 percent on May 3 is now more likely, too. Rising oil prices are not only affecting current inflation rates but they're also overshadowing next year, ... It can't be ruled out that risks for price developments will deteriorate that much over the medium term that we might have to expect the annual inflation rate to slightly exceed 2 percent.

Although we expect consumer spending to slow sharply in the fourth quarter, to below 2 percent, as a result of lower auto sales, we expect that GDP will still edge back above 4 percent on an inventory rebound, higher business spending, and hurricane recovery spending.

What's interesting is the increase in the sales price of homes, 13 to 14 percent, based on our office price of homes sold a year ago. Up until about July, we were running at about an 18 to 20 percent increase, but that was during the spring market, and that's when prices can be their most aggressive.

Rising rates could have a tremendous impact on slowing consumer spending. Consumer spending has been about 6 percent, when adjusted for inflation. Rising rates could bring it down to 2 or 3 percent.

For our New York city market, we have increased ticket prices by only 2.5 percent, ... This is our first ticket price increase in two and a half years, during which time the costs associated with other forms of entertainment have increased dramatically, and inflation has grown by approximately 4 percent.

If you have productivity growing faster than the economy, how can you expect demand for labor to be all that strong? I'm still hopeful that unemployment won't go much higher than 6.2 percent or 6.3 percent, but where we'll peak is not as important as when we turn around. If we sort of linger at 6.2 percent, that will put some downward pressure on consumer spending.

The monthly increase of 0.4 percent is much higher than expected, and means we'll have annual German inflation of two percent in April.

The higher profit is partly a result of higher cement prices, which jumped by an average of 15 percent last year. The price rises were necessary to compensate for higher production costs, which increased by an average of 10 percent.

The general rule of thumb is that, for each dollar change in [stock prices], there's roughly a 4-cent change in consumer spending, ... If stocks rally 10 percent, that would increase the value of equities by about $1 trillion, adding about $40 billion in new spending to the economy.

In our forecast, we see consumer spending slowing a little bit in the fourth quarter to 3.1 percent from 3.8 percent for the same period last year, ... The rationale is that as the housing market slows , there'll be a cooling effect in the home wealth effect and the fluctuating energy prices will also have some drag on spending in the months ahead.

We expect the Fed to focus on the risks to higher inflation caused by higher energy prices, supply-chain disruptions and the strain on resources resulting from the massive rescue, relief and rebuilding effort now underway.

There are inflation figures due out Thursday and Friday. The CPI and the PPI both are expected at 0.5 percent (increase), which is a very large gain, but both of those gains are expected to be driven by higher oil prices.
