The fourth quarter... that's ordsprog

The fourth quarter... that's still partly the good news of 1997 and that was truly a good news year. The question is what happens in the first, second, third and fourth quarters of 1998 and I think that's a deteriorating process.

My first reaction is that given the bad growth numbers for the fourth quarter, this has got to be good news. Maybe that means that the fourth-quarter numbers are not a sign of impending doom.

It was a good feeling not to have to play in the fourth quarter. It's always good to get some rest. We let a couple (of games) slip away here, but that's old news. We've put it behind us. This is a new year and we have new goals.

I really liked how we started the fourth quarter. Things were not going our way to end the third quarter. We were not getting all the calls. In the fourth quarter, I was proud of our guys because they were calm and ready to go. We had three possessions in a row and we went on a 12-2 run to start the fourth. In all, the good news for the fourth quarter on external balances should be well-received and underpin the Canadian dollar.

We had our best fourth quarter of the year. We didn't get the bounces for three quarters, but the girls took control in the fourth.

I'm not surprised. (The fourth quarter and first quarter) generally are the best quarters of the year, corporate profits were very good, and the economic data was mixed to favorable.

We're going to have awful earnings reports for the second and third-quarter so we have to brace ourselves for that. To make a sustained rally, we need to see economic news and earnings news start to turn positive and we don't see that happening until the fourth quarter. I was disappointed in our fourth quarter beginning. We put ourselves in a good position, and didn't score for the first three minutes of the fourth quarter. We gave it away in the fourth, and went from one to eleven.

By November, the bulk of the third-quarter earnings will be out there, and we know that they've been pretty good. But for stocks to go higher, we're going to need another catalyst. Expectations for a strong fourth quarter could do it, positive comments on the holiday season could do it, but really, I think it's going to be the economic news.
