We have four monitoring stations here at Bahia Grande, ... The land based station is primarily meteorological and it measures wind speed, wind direction, temperature, barometric pressure, relative humidity and soon we hope to install a rain gauge.

The system features the standard meteorological package. Wind, rain, humidity, temperature and other features are measured and collected for historical data. We also integrate the technology into the classroom to study how weather patterns effect pollution in our atmosphere.

In all likelihood, the variations in gas flux depend on a combination of barometric pressure, wind speed, Earth tides and soil moisture, but we have not yet developed a model to simplify this complex system.

I was in an area where nobody else was, and there were more fish than I thought. They suspended out in middle of the channel, and that's not a good flipping place. If you get a little wind, the fish move to the edge. Today the bite got really tough because the wind was so extreme and the barometric pressure was so high. My keeper fish were all on the keeper hook, and that's scary. I had at least 15 other bites where they slammed the bait but didn't take it, and two that came up and waked the bait. They just wouldn't take it, but the wind was my friend this week.

Most experts agree that calculating wind chill gives a number too low. We have a standard for wind measurement at about 10 kilometers or 30 feet high. It's good for aviation use but it overestimates the wind speed. The wind down below is lighter (slower) than the wind at that height.

We have these trails of electrons left behind, and the wind in the upper atmosphere causes them to drift. It pushes them one direction or another. We can measure the speed at which those electrons are drifting and infer the wind speed.

It's pretty bad. Our biggest concern is the wind and relative humidity is very similar to what we saw March 12; hopefully it's not a repeat.

We chose this location because there's 18 mph wind speed, it's 70 feet deep and 2.5 nautical miles from the shore. Offshore, the wind is flat, on land, it's not as flat.

We're seeing lower wind, higher humidity, overcast skies with the potential of rain. That should help contain the fire to make it easier to put out.

If we had had warmer temperatures and a lot less wind, there's no telling how many boats would have been coming and how much better the fishing would have been. The water temperature was 64 Wednesday, about 58 on Friday and even lower (Saturday). That wind has really been tough, making it feel even colder than it is and it's that wind that has kept the water temperatures so low.

We issue these when we expect wind speeds to exceed 20 mph and relative humidity of 20 percent or less. The conditions for rapid fire growth and spread are pretty high.

It's thinking ahead of where you think the fire is going to be ? looking at weather reports, wind speed, humidity, past burn patterns.

Wind is intermittent and the developer will first need to go through six to 12 months of wind monitoring (to determine best placement).

The best thing is we played in calm conditions. I think the wind is the biggest challenge we face. Rain doesn't really affect us that much. It wasn't the rain we were trying to beat. It was the wind. And we had a chance today. It was pretty calm.
