One obvious explanation (for the weakness) is that investors are aware that Best Buy faces much tougher sales comparisons, particularly in the second half of the year. Looking at the numbers, second-quarter sales were up 7.8 percent, third-quarter sales rose 5.8 percent.

It could have been a lot worse given the expectations. We had lackluster sales through the spring, through summer, terrorist attacks, and a recession, so an increase of 1 or 2 percent is decent. The bigger factor is: What were the margins of those sales?

We would be better buyers on weakness rather than sellers on weakness, given an expected sales acceleration in April, which could carry into summer.

The fact that the boom is ending should not be interpreted as indicating any serious trouble for builders or realtors -- unless, of course, some overextended on debt in expectations that sales would continue to accelerate. Prior to the recent explosion in sales, a level of 700,000 had been considered very strong. The current trend should be viewed as a return to normalcy rather than as the beginning of a housing recession.

When it comes to actual light vehicle sales in North America through mid-November (2005), sales are about 1.6 per cent higher than they were in 2004. It is not as if the industry is declining. The decline is GM and Ford, with sales shifting to the other companies.

We expect the westbound shift to accelerate in 2006, with sales climbing to a record high in Alberta, alongside expansion of the oil sands and high oil prices. It's all vehicle sales and gas. Chain-store sales were relatively strong during the month, suggesting consumers diverted their vehicle spending to other sectors. We also had a cold snap which prompted early spending on winter wear.

New vehicle sales declined modestly, reflecting the performance of the broader new car marketplace following the end of the employee discount programs. Other sales and revenues benefited from increases in extended service plan revenues and service department sales.

It's likely we got a decline in sales. We've had a drop in vehicle sales and it also looks like back-to-school was on the disappointing side.

The current pace of home sales activity remains historically strong – only eight months have had a higher sales pace. A modest downtrend, to a sales volume that is expected to be the second-best year ever in 2006, will be good for the long-term health of the housing sector.
