This is a very good wake-up call for Chinese companies. They will now learn to adhere to international corporate governance practices and also accounting standards.

In the 1980s, Chinese companies tried to get out of the traditional, centrally planned economy and become market players. In the 1990s, many Chinese companies tried to restructure their company structure, to have ownership diversification, to go public domestically or internationally, and then to learn to set up new corporate governance. And after that, I think Chinese companies are looking more and more to the global competition.

To succeed in this environment, accountants must go beyond their traditional roles of simply delivering financial data. Rather, they will need to discuss the implications of this data in the broad context of compliance and how it impacts other areas of the business.

This is a just a first pass at a set of research that we are going to pursue as a group here in the accounting department, trying to understand the issues surrounding media and governance. For example, we are also analyzing interviews and other communication in an effort to detect lying by corporate officers.
