Our growth in the distributed management software space in mature markets pretty much outstripped everyone.

With this acquisition, CA will be the only company to address the management of applications, IT assets and users across all hardware and software, from the mainframe to the distributed environment.

There are only so many growth markets. As concentration of ownership goes forward, you'll see future acquisitions of newspaper chains go pretty much the way this one did: The buyer will keep the growth markets and discard the rest.

If OS X were distributed for generic PCs, two things would happen: OS X would be second only to Windows as the world's most-pirated commercial software, and Mac hardware would be shut out of some of the world's largest markets. Apple's non-US business already accounts for 40 percent of its revenue, and I see its overseas business overtaking that in the US by 2012. Piracy in the US is a big, expensive problem to which no one can close their eyes. But elsewhere, software vendors don't just lose sales to piracy. Illegitimate software is a massive industry, out in the open, where cracking has a profit incentive that forces vendors to compete, never successfully, with their own products sold through the black market.

Our core markets in the Greater Washington, DC region are strong, as evidenced by the 9% and 10% same store NOI growth for the last two quarters, respectively, as well as our 2.1 million square feet of leasing activity for 2005. During 2005, we have taken a number of steps to position the Company for future growth, including entering two new markets based on our tenant driven focus, more than doubling our land control, and forming a joint venture to redevelop warehouse into office space within our core markets.

Some of our largest customers are beginning to realize that a combination of open source development tools and distributed development processes, mirroring how the open source community operates, are yielding significant increases in software quality, even while decreasing time-to-market. Our experience with distributed software development ideally positions us to help customers win in this new environment. We're cautious, considering how well real estate funds have performed since the beginning of 2000. As much as some of the fundamentals look to be improving in real estate sub-sectors - for example, we've had sustained job growth, and that leads to greater demand for office and apartment space - we think price appreciation has largely outstripped the rate of change.

Phone.com is going against some well-capitalized and profitable entities -- Nokia (NOK) and Ericsson. It obviously felt that having more heft would help it to compete with software developers. And Software.com gets an entry into the wireless infrastructure space -- a space that everyone wants to play in. The combined entity will have its work cut out for it.

There's probably more growth here because it's still in a startup-type mode, whereas the Australian and the U.S. REIT markets are at more mature points in their cycles.

There is no doubt that software as a service has become a driving force within the software industry. Indications are that customer adoption will continue over the next five years and spending will remain on the rise. The software industry must adopt a new frame of reference for value creation. Software as a service delivery is at the forefront of this trend, and adoption will grow as more customers experience software as a service and the offerings mature, becoming more readily accepted and available in the market.

This shift in relative growth rates reflects the increasing importance of after-market services to the revenue mix of CRM software vendors. These rates of growth indicate a mature market, matching the anticipated pace of overall I.T. spending. However, the total amount of money to be invested in CRM remains large.

Emerging markets and consumer demand in the mature regions were the major growth engines on a worldwide basis.
