I would agree that the current low job growth is a matter of concern, but this index is aimed at the long run. Massachusetts was hit particularly hard by the last recession, but it also means we're poised for a strong recovery.

The recovery in the leading index could indicate that the economy is poised for growth by late summer. There appears to be enough economic demand to end the slide in industrial production, though no strong rebound appears in sight.

The recovery of 2002 looks poised to mirror the recovery of a decade ago, with a moderate economic and earnings recovery following a short and shallow recession.

Back before the recession, we had strong job growth and no inflation. There's fuzzy thinking going on here -- I thought we'd broken the old idea that strong growth is bad. As long as productivity growth can remain high, fast job growth is not a problem.

[Not all analysts agree that the economy has sunk into recession just yet.] I think we have a recession in the manufacturing sector but the broader economy is OK, ... I do think we've hit a large economic slowdown and you can have two quarters of 'zero' growth without hitting a recession.

The surge in the Monster Local Employment Index in February suggests a healthy and confident business climate across all major metro areas in the U.S., with particularly strong growth amongst markets in the West and South. The first quarter of the year is clearly off to a solid start with the Index results showing strong, broad growth in employer demand for workers.

While not as strong as in July, the (index) still indicates significant economic growth in both manufacturing and the overall economy. Both new orders and production continue at relatively strong levels. This month`s comments from supply managers indicate great concern over recent new highs in the energy commodities.

The market's firm because the U.S. producer price index on Friday wasn't too bad and there is continuing buying from overseas. The index should consolidate at current levels, however, although selling pressure won't be too strong.

The strong signal from the indicators means that the recession could be over soon. Three successive monthly increases, each larger than the one before, bring the level of the leading series above the pre-recession peak.

Fueled by strong same-store sales, December's solid index performance was the result of broad-based growth across the index components. Three out of five restaurant operators reported a same-store sales gain in December -- the strongest level in 12 months. In addition, the Expectations Index posted its fourth consecutive monthly increase, which points toward growth in sales, staffing levels and capital expenditures during the next several months.

Although the U.S. economy has managed modest real growth through 2002 and into 2003, most economists agree that a strong and well-balanced recovery will require a greater contribution from the business sector, in the form of increased capital investment and hiring,

People are becoming more accepting of a slow, gradual recovery, whereas last year, they had great growth numbers in mind, and when that didn't pan out, markets got hit hard. As long as data don't indicate a new round of fundamental economic deterioration, we're still on the same growth track.

There seems to be some concern in the marketplace that the economic recovery will be slower than expected , lessening the fear of inflation. As a matter of fact, personal income and consumer spending growth for the first quarter were moderate and showed inflation to be well constrained.

The question is how informed are you? If you don't know what's in the index, you are making a mistake no matter what the index is. If you don't know what's in an index, you shouldn't be buying it.

My own concern is does the consumer give out and drag down the economy in 2006? The corporate sector is well into a recovery, but the consumer never had a recession.
