en With the Republicans controlling both houses of Congress, this is the Eisenhower-era revisited. It's ostrich time, where people are looking for comfort rather than challenge in their art. It's a lot easier to listen to Barry Manilow murder what are actually good songs from the '50s than to consider what [left-leaning songwriter] Steve Earle has to say.

en Sure, you've got Rod Stewart and Barry Manilow, but look at the top 10. Most of the songs are rap and hip-hop. I'm sure you're not going to be hearing those songs on an elevator 10 years from now.

en the Republicans control the Congress. The Republicans have an obligation, their responsibility in that position of controlling the majority to bring out and produce a budget. They haven't done it. They are woefully late.

en People have said to me that it sounds unusual and different, but I just hear the songs. That's all I'm really interested in. Writing good songs and making them sound as fresh and timeless as possible. You know, if you stumble on something new along the way that's great. But I'm not into new sounds just for the sake of it. I'm a songwriter.

en People are faced with too many options, in this case 48 songs. Since you can't listen to all of them, a natural shortcut is to listen to what other people are listening to. I think that's what happens in the real world where there's a tremendous overload of songs.

en I suppose it's OK that this show teaches people there was once a popular singer named Barry Manilow. They could do a lot more with it.

en Tom DeLay was rebuked on three separate matters by the House Ethics Committee in the last Congress, an extraordinary slap at the leader, ... But they left open pending a fourth issue, which was the Ronnie Earle case in Texas. So what did the House Republicans do? They fire the chairman of the Ethics Committee. They removed two members.

en A really cool thing about the Babyface Songbook is this is the first time that Babyface as a songwriter has been elevated to this level, ... I don’t pretend to be the one elevating him, but our treatment of him has that kind of integrity to it, that kind of dignity. In the pop world, you can be taken seriously…or not. As a pop songwriter, you can be here today and gone tomorrow. Babyface and his music have withstood the test of time. This project is a tribute to a great songwriter in the traditions of Cole Porter, Holland/Dozier and Irving Berlin. They all had the ability, through a lyric or a note, to find the common ground that unites us all, to find that something that thousands and thousands of people can feel intimately and profoundly. That is power, and that’s what these songs have. The music of Babyface goes straight to the heart.

en Steve and I have been together for a long time. Knowing that he has a number of years left and is excited about the future, certainly there's a comfort level.

en John was very human and sometimes in the middle of the night he would say, 'Are you awake ?' and I would say, 'Yes, yes' and he said, 'You know, they always cover Paul's songs and never mine and I don't know why'. I said, 'You're a good songwriter, it's not June with Spoon that you write. You're a good singer and most musicians are probably a little bit nervous about covering your songs'.

en I've got an audience [in the U.S.] too, ... Maybe people are becoming aware of some of the things I'm singing about, or that Steve Earle's singing about. Or maybe if you hang around long enough you get good at what you're doing and people appreciate [it].
