This is the first time in years that I can remember that we are not in a deficit situation. We have zero deficit and we have zero surplus.

What we've seen over the last couple of weeks with disruptions at copper mines has narrowed the opinion of whether the market is going to be in deficit or surplus. More and more people are thinking it's going to be in deficit this year.

I think the question on most people's minds is what are they going to do to be able to maintain the surplus and not overspend so that we move back into a deficit situation.

If there is an 'issue' with the US external accounts, it is not the bilateral trade deficit with China but rather the overall deficit that the US incurs. After all, the large current account deficit means that the US spends more than it produces, which requires financing from abroad.

Don't get me wrong, I am glad we are looking at a surplus instead of a deficit. But then I think we should have a plan for that surplus.

The narrower trade deficit is a positive piece of news for February. However, with energy prices going up recently, you have to remember that there's a good chance that the trade deficit will widen again over the next (few) months.
