It's funny, in the course of three hours he became enamored with Marv Levy and the head coach. These decisions are so often made with your gut, and this was an easy call for him.

Marv and I entered into an agreement initially that made him the general manager of the Bills. He was hired to be GM and would never coach the team. We are excited to have Marv as our general manager as we move forward in hiring a new head coach.

It seems to be a trend, not only in sports, they are looking for people in the business world with more experience. It was encouraging to me to see Marv Levy come back.

I'd love to see Marv back in the organization, back in Buffalo in any capacity. I don't know if it's a realistic chance or not, but yes, certainly, Marv is as sharp as anybody and I think he'd help the club. He was a great coach, he's smart, he relates to people well, he's a great communicator, he has a bucket load of experience.

He has head coach responsibilities here and makes head coach-type decisions all the time.

He really had the enthusiasm you would want to find in a head coach. He was passionate about what he wanted to do. He cared about the kids. It was a pretty easy decision to make him the head coach.

If you can't get excited about this, you might as well leave the profession. This is the only way any of us know how to do it. All of us are in the same boat. I work the same hours as an assistant coach, as a coordinator. I'm sure John (Fox) worked the same hours as a coordinator as he does as a head coach. We kind of all leave out of here together a lot.

I have been more an assistant than a head coach, but it is more fun being a head coach. It is more agony, too. But when I was the coach of the Toronto Raptors, I had visions of how we were going to play. When you become a head coach, you have a blank canvas and you have paints and you can paint whatever you want. As an assistant coach, you make suggestions.

Never is a bad word, to say you'll never be a head coach again. But am I actively looking? No. Did Bob call me and ask me if I was interested in being the head coach? No. He called and asked if I was interested in helping him by being a consultant.

I'd missed some easy shots and made some ordinary decisions . . . but (coach Al Westover) encourages us to shoot. Mac gave me the shot from the play we drew up and it felt good.

Mike analyzes everything. He works at his trade. He came into it new, and spent countless hours learning the craft, talking with people around the league to find out what it is he needs to do, and given that opportunity, how he would approach being a head coach. He's very detailed in his preparation. Mike's a very deep thinker and very passionate about the game, and those are two pretty good qualities to become a head coach.

Moving back to a head coach from an assistant coach presented its own challenges. When you are the head coach you are setting the tone. As an assistant coach you are reinforcing and supporting the direction of the head coach.

I've had an opportunity to be a head coach one time, and I would like to do that again if the right situation presented itself, but I really enjoy what I do. What I do, and what Gene does, is really more fun than being a head coach. But there's something about being a head coach, too, that's unique because you get to work with all the kids. If it presents itself, it would be wonderful.

Now it's her turn to manage. She is the head coach, but this will be a cooperative effort. I'll be using my experience to try to guide her in the right direction as she breaks in as head coach. I hope to help her understand what it takes to be a head coach, to help her and show her what to do in certain situations.
