The sign of a great player is that players around him become better. Lawrence has that and it's a rare commodity. Players who fall into that category would include Ellery Hanley, Martin Johnson and, I guess, Dean Richards, although I didn't see much of him as a player. Others may be more physically talented than them but they can't match their competitive edge. It means so much to them they go through pain to get there.

More important than that, we need them to believe in the league and their role in building the sport.

It certainly ... has to make the opportunity even somewhat more enticing given the fact that Johnson & Johnson would be coming in with the largest player in the market somewhat handicapped.

The problem that Johnson & Johnson and any company even half the size of Johnson & Johnson faces is buying something that can impact their growth rate, and that's not an easy task.

I take my line from a remark made by Aubrey Herbert, surveying his fellow members of the intelligence cadre brought together in Cairo in 1914: 'Then there's Lawrence, an odd gnome, half cad - with a touch of genius'. AW Lawrence [Lawrence's youngest brother and the keeper of the flame for more than half a century] thought that was just right.

We are somewhat surprised to see Guidant's board support Johnson & Johnson's offer. Recall that this is the same company that thought Guidant was only worth $63 a few weeks ago. Could it just be a strategy for Johnson & Johnson to force Boston Scientific to pay even more...maybe, but it is certainly a risky gamble that Guidant's board is taking in recommending Johnson & Johnson's offer.

It seems like (Johnson & Johnson and Boston Scientific) are going to dominate the market at least through '06.
