There's no zero-emissions coal. There is a technology called clean coal, which is getting very, very close.

The future of coal is clean. Of course, coal is presently very clean as well. Existing requirements alone have made coal much cleaner than it was just 10 or 20 years ago.

For more than a decade, we have been involved with the DOE and other partners in the development of clean coal technology. We are excited about the opportunity to now apply new technology to generate power more cleanly and efficiently using our nation's abundant coal reserves.

The new power station uses environmentally friendly technology of pulverized coal firing. It increases efficiency by 4% to approximately 46%, a peak figure for coal-fired power stations, simultaneously reducing CO2 emissions by approximately 20%.

Coal today currently represents only 0.02 per cent of revenues for the national government. Coal is not very significant in terms of economic production. However coal is important to other countries like the US, which consumes more than 900 million tons of coal each year.

We're going to need all forms of energy production, including more coal and nuclear. Despite the Bush administration's support for clean coal technologies, the US is not investing anywhere near what will be needed to make this work.

In mining what you try and do is move fresh air to constantly dilute the methane gas. Methane is a potential fuel for an explosion in a mine. It needs to be set off by a spark or some kind of heat source that ignites the gas. Also, in coal mines you have coal dust created by grinding of the coal. There are other things. That coal dust is also potentially explosive.

Emissions from Australia and United States are spiraling out of control. We need rapid deployment of clean energy such as wind and solar today. If the conference just throws research dollars to the coal industry to clean up their act in 15 to 20 years, we've missed an opportunity.

This has to be gradual. We cannot close the small coal mines completely because they produce too much coal.

If your goal is to reduce costs, then coal is a good idea. If the goal is a renewable fuel, coal is a bad idea. When greenhouse-gas emissions go up, environmentalists take note. Then you've got a problem.
