For this market to really push on we need to see unemployment trends drop, so that the retail sector can be certain of making a contribution to the recovery of the U.S. economy.

Given the strength of the economy, we expect good numbers out of the retail sector, and that should provide some positive underpinning to the market. I think it'll show that the retail sector remains very healthy.

Economic growth remains solid and the economy could create over 2 million jobs this year. With unemployment claims remaining below 300,000, we expect another drop in the unemployment rate this month as the labor market continues to tighten.

Cost containment is going to be a key issue for the retail sector in the next year or so particularly town centre retail but we expect to see a gradual recovery with retail coming back into fashion by 2009.

Although the U.S. economy has managed modest real growth through 2002 and into 2003, most economists agree that a strong and well-balanced recovery will require a greater contribution from the business sector, in the form of increased capital investment and hiring,

The service [sector] is holding this economy together, but there are signs it's beginning to deteriorate. As those companies begin to cut back, we're going to see increasing unemployment, and consumer spending... is likely to get much worse, and that's going to create higher unemployment.

The productivity numbers today (Thursday) and tomorrow's (Friday's) report do nothing to support a bullish market. I would be concerned if we saw the unemployment drop below 4 percent because that would show the economy is not slowing down.

The wholesale and international contribution have masked some of the worrying trends in the retail side of the business.

There still is evidence that the most important sector of the economy, the labor market, is still only in the process of stabilizing. It's not in full-fledged recovery yet.

Coming on the heels of stronger reports on retail sales and durable-goods orders, as well as a sharp drop in first-time claims for unemployment, this ... drop in consumer confidence was a cold slap in the face to all of those economists, including ourselves, that are looking for a second-half rebound.

The year was so bad and the trends in much of the economy are so weak that very few people believe that the economy is ready for a sustainable recovery.

These inflation data, along with slowdowns in retail sales and jobs creation, indicate the economy is cooling, except for the red-hot housing sector and recession-proof activities like health care and education, ... But don't look for the Fed to halt interest rate increases anytime soon. The recovery has plenty of life left.
