If the inflation reading comes in high it could really torpedo the markets. The markets were really bracing for that figure today, going a little higher with the idea that they could really fall tomorrow.

We think we're on track to become one of the most recognizable brands in the world. We're in 35 markets already. There are some new markets that we're very interested in, such as Russia and Eastern Europe. India is another unique place to be in but it's not going to happen tomorrow. They've heard Greenspan say that inflation [is showing up on the radar screen] and they're waiting for it to show up any day now. But the inflationary picture remains just as good as ever.

One of the three things worrying the markets for weeks -- namely, interest rates -- has diminished, today, ... But the geopolitical incidents and higher oil prices -- which are connected -- have sent a chill through global markets, creating this buyer's strike, and we're following suit.

Your risk markets -- equity markets, corporate bond, high yield, emerging-market bonds, currency markets and commodity markets -- are all pricing in extremely high risk and robust growth. In contrast, the TIPs market is pricing in weak or modest growth.

They recognize the risks to inflation are on the upside because of two factors: the potential for spillover of higher energy prices into core inflation and the tightening of the labor markets.

There's a feeling that U.S. inflation may be under control, and this helped U.S. markets. The optimism may spread on to the opening of European markets.

That means the markets are going to define where power goes. The markets are going to figure this out, and that bodes well for Wyoming.

My concern is that what's happened here is that inflation is higher than the Fed anticipated. On top of that, the kind of tightening already imposed by the markets, in terms of lower equities and higher bond yields, is setting up weaker growth in 2005.

The markets have been reacting to news on Iran, but the physical oil markets have been fairly relaxed so I'm not surprised to have seen them fall.

The European markets rebounded from earlier today, but a lot of uncertainty remains in the markets. First there's the political backdrop. Secondly, with regard to the U.S. data on Friday, we had U.S. labor figures which weren't too encouraging. But markets across Europe have made considerable headway since Sept. 11. There's a degree of profit-taking going on.

Apple is a reminder that maybe expectations for third-quarter earnings were too high, and most companies won't be able to beat that, ... The combination of earnings worries, with recent comments by Fed officials on inflation will drag on the markets today.

Really, we've had some focus (on oil) since mid-February, when both markets made a significant low, and both markets had a near retest of those lows on Wednesday. Oil is emerging as the focus for the gold market as a surrogate for general commodity inflation. Without that kind of commodity inflation, then gold becomes a less attractive investment.

The fall took all the markets by surprise and especially ours, which was very bullish. It will take a day or two to figure out whether this is an opportunity to buy or a lasting change of trend.
