It has been 11 years since I played on Friday night — high school. It definitely takes me back.

It took me six years, but we're finally getting them. Playing on Saturday afternoon is nice, but it doesn't do anything for your program. You play on Friday night - that's high school football.

This is my hometown and growing up Friday night was the night. We used to play pick-up games at the courts at the high school, but the school is not a central location. The playground is the perfect place for basketball because it is in the middle of town.

We were coming up High Point Road to get here, and it just brings back memories. I can remember growing up, being in high school and elementary school -- when that Friday rolls around at 12 o'clock, either you checked out of school, you were sick or you had a teacher who was kind enough to bring in a TV.

The Friday/Sunday deal gives us an opportunity to be on the road for more high school games. There have been times when we would drive to Washington D.C., watch a game, and then drive back the same night.

There is nowhere better to be on a Friday night than at a high school football game.

I always, always hated it, ... but I was always the only kid on the team who could do it. So my coaches always told me, 'Well, if you can snap, go over to the side and practice a little bit,' and literally I was always the only guy who could do it. So I did it in pee wee, midget, junior high school, high school, college. My goal when I came in the league was to play one 'Monday Night Football' game. Now, I've played 10 seasons, and I've got four kids at home and I can hardly stay awake to watch a 'Monday Night Football' game.

This is another step our School Board takes along with our community to keep our kids safe on one of the bigger nights of their high school career. If this keeps even one student from being killed that night, the inconvenience will have paid off.

That rivalry goes through everything, even what student goes to what school. Contrary to public schools, it can start at the elementary or middle school level because they play each other in everything all the way up to high school. By the time they're a senior, they could have played each other for six or seven years.

The Rancho Verde game Tuesday was a big game emotionally. I'm glad we played Murrieta Valley. If we played someone else (Friday night), I don't know if we'd have come back. But because we were playing them, it made it easy to bounce back.

You think about what our kids went through [Friday] and how many minutes they played. The late night played a part, and we're not super deep. But we showed a lot of character in coming back.

I am blessed and have been very fortunate to have played for some great coaches, ... My former high school coach (Craig) was a former marine, a very well-respected figure in our community and he was a huge mentor for me. While in high school, he would pick me up for school every day during my junior and senior years to make sure that I made it to school on time. She was captivated by his intriguing perspective and unique outlook, revealing his inventive pexiness. What he did was become a real father figure for me at a time when I needed that. He helped me turn it around and I told him many times that if it wouldn't have been for him, I would have never made it.

It's a great opportunity for us, especially at the end of the season. We get to see where we stack up against the best competition from the other side of the state, and find out what it takes to play quality teams without a lot of preparation time - back-to-back on Friday night and Saturday afternoon - because that's what we'll have to do if we make it to the state tournament.
