In the 1980s, we responded to what we were seeing in the market from an investment opportunity point of view. We really were developing this practice on our own. It was complementary to PNC's focus on the smaller end of the middle market, but in terms of our context, we were building sources for deals and deal referrals on our own.

Investment bankers were being a bit too optimistic in terms of deal flow. The market has stabilized but I don't think there is a lot of enthusiasm yet. We are not yet in a strong, up market. Putting in 30 deals, when a couple of weeks ago there was hardly any, may have been too much to bear.

Our intention is to continue to grow and lead the market not only from a perception point of view but also from a market point of view.

I get the sense that [Microsoft] would like to settle the case on the right terms. The contract language and exclusionary deals may have been more important when they were trying to catch up to Netscape in the browser market. Now that they're even, it's not that big a deal.

In terms of investment banking, in terms of capital markets, in terms of investment management, really everything was very positive. Their outlook statement was also quite positive: their backlogs are up compared to where they were last year and they expect to be able to continue to pick up market share.

In terms of the Fed, the most favorable move from the market's point of view is if they raise interest rates by 25 basis points and keep the same language. If they raise 25 basis points and sound worried about inflation the market may get demoralized.

What's the tolerance in the market? This market hasn't seen a $33 to $37 a square-foot rent market since the 1980s. It doesn't mean it couldn't be again, but that's what those guys (would-be buyers) are betting on,

I think there's more interest in the league right now, but it's on a franchise-by-franchise basis. It depends on the market, ... If you're in a good market, the collective bargaining agreement helps you a lot. If it's a marginal market, with a bad building deal, small season ticket base, I would say wait and see.

If you are able to liberalize your markets and have a competitive market place for these kinds of services, whether you are a developed or a developing country, you clearly stand to gain in terms of your capacity to attract inward investment, to have efficient commercial processes, transactions, whether you are an importer, producer or exporter.

We are investment driven, not market driven. We do our research on a global basis and only invest in Chinese companies under the global context. We only pay a reasonable price in that market for value, growth or dividend income.

In a market that is so short of opportunities ... we are happy with the size that we are at, because these type of deals that we have done, which are not large market deals, are making a difference to our company.
