We deem this action representative of a market that has lost the flurry of last week's panic buying and instead is rethinking its view as to the near-term motivation of the Fed and the impact of Katrina.

The market has already come to the conclusion that the medium-term impact of Katrina will be negligible if not net positive, therefore weak figures in the near term won't have any bearing. The market is now looking for a Fed move next week.

Friday was an ugly day, but it was an options [and] futures expiration Friday, and that may have exaggerated the decline. Additionally, there were still a lot of stocks making new highs for the week as a whole. Longer-term traders can start looking for buying opportunities. I don't think there's any rush to find those opportunities, but it's too early to panic on the overall market trend.

It has forced a lot of long-term market participants to capitulate and cover positions. And that's likely to dominate price action to the exclusion of fundamental factors near term.

The market has done pretty well this week. I think the fund managers that took a more cautious stance after Hurricane Katrina may be doing a little buying now, but it's a quiet day.

The Fed is still looking at inflation. Katrina is certainly going to have some negative impact on the economy but longer-term Katrina will be a positive as we rebuild the Gulf area.

With tech stocks, you know, you have to look out over the long term. These are stocks that vacillate between exuberance and panic. It's going to happen, and so today maybe we are more on the panic side. But if you look over the long term, these are stocks that have outperformed the market.

Much of the surrounding area and feeder markets suffered considerable damage, which could certainly depress business in the near term. Pinnacle has the largest exposure to the market, which is a concern considering the recent impact to the company from Katrina.

We are looking at something that's very much about panic, fear and greed right now. This is a fantastic buying opportunity in the medium to long term.

Let me be clear: This is a temporary problem due to Katrina and will be resolved soon -- not a cause for alarm or panic, ... It is not a long-term situation.

The stock market is hoping that the Katrina effect will cause the Fed to stop its campaign, or at least pause, until it becomes clear just how big the impact of Katrina is on the economy.
