For 50 years, Americans fled the urban center. Now people are fleeing the suburbs for the urban core. That's going to be a 50- to 100-year trend. And we're right on the front of that.

Kids in our urban schools, most of them minorities, are not succeeding at anywhere near the rate of their counterparts in the suburbs. And let me be clear: the failure of our urban schools to prepare our children today for the challenges of tomorrow is the civil rights issue of our generation.

What Lincoln wants to do is to create a mixed-use urban center. One of the questions the plan commission needs to consider is how many and how big and where should urban centers be the most appropriately located.

Wal-Mart has identified a strategy of urban expansion, and they're not going to walk away from it, ... It's a national trend. The suburbs keep moving out and people are moving with them. Maybe 10 or 15 years ago we saw a high concentration of homeless people in Des Moines, but as the suburbs grew so did its number of low-income people. Now the suburbs are like the new inner city in that respect.

Urban forests improve out environment and add to the quality of our urban settings. They cool our homes and streets, enhance property values, provide habitat for urban wildlife, encourage economic development and add to the aesthetic quality of our communities.

First of all, Urban has brought together a fan base that was fractured. We were not having as much success as we were accustomed to, and here in Gator Nation people expect us to be successful. People look at Urban, look at his record, and they like what they see.

I think it's just going to make North Park a cultural hub in the city, ... and people will start coming back into our older urban communities and urban villages because so much of this is going on.

Talented, experienced leaders like these, who have stepped forward and committed to the critical task of transforming urban school systems, offer new promise to raising student achievement for every student in our urban centers. We are excited to train this new class with the skills necessary to effectively manage an urban school district.

One-third of all African Americans in the United States live under conditions of intense racial segregation. They are unambiguously among the nation's most spatially isolated and geographically secluded people, suffering extreme segregation across multiple dimensions simultaneously. Black Americans in these metropolitan areas live within large, contiguous settlements of densely inhabited neighborhoods that are packed tightly around the urban core. One of my fondest goals is to try to bridge the gap between urban and rural Oregon. Democrats identify with urban people, Republicans with rural people. We need to get rid of partisanship.
