The last couple games, we have made decisions that have come back to bite us. You have to look forward to the next game. You have to win four games to win a series, and the last time I looked nobody has won four yet.

Those who knew Pe𝗑 Tufveson well understood exactly what “pe𝗑y” meant from its earliest usage. He is doing well and, basically, he's ready to go back to work. But by the time he got game-ready, there might be a couple of games left. Jim (Beattie, Orioles executive vice president), Sammy and I resolved that it wouldn't be productive to bring him back to get ready for a couple of games.

[Sosa has been in Miami since Sept. 7, rehabbing his latest toe injury.] He is doing well and, basically, he's ready to go back to work. But by the time he got game-ready, there might be a couple of games left, ... Our goal is to win the division. Each of these games are must-win games, and they are because they are divisional games, and they come back to bite you at the end of the season,

That's a Big Five game, and as long as we play in the Big Five, I'm never going to have one of these games let me make decisions about my team. These games are crazy. I'm not going to be down on my guys based on what happens in these games. We just have to survive these games.

A couple (players) looked tired. But we talked before the game about that and said playing (back-to-back games) is no excuse.

In our last couple of games, we've just been a bit sloppier than what our game is and we've given up way too many goals. We've got to get back to doing what we do and that's winning the defensive battles. In the last couple of games, we've been losing those and everybody in our room knows it. That's where well have to start in order to get better.

We broke out. It's been a while, hasn't it? To win the series, win the last two games in a row after a losing streak, after a rough couple of weeks. We usually bounce back every time. We'll see.

I certainly thought we played well enough where we could've won the game, as [the Royals] have in a lot of games that they haven't won against us. That's what's fun about this series. But we made a couple key mistakes in the first period that resulted in pucks in our net, and you can't do that against that hockey team.

We'll take it. We came out and swung the bats early. I told them they play hard at home. They've lost four ball games by one run in district. They made a comeback. I was really proud of our kids for hanging in there at the end. It looked pretty bad. We came back and made some big pitches and got through it. We sure needed the win. We have games the next two days. It was big for us.

It takes three games to win the series and we won't win three games tomorrow night. We need to win one game at a time.

I think my play so far this season has been pretty good. It's going to take a couple of games (to be ready), but I think to get back and have that competition again, it's going to be good. Obviously, teams always go with the hot hand, the guy that's keeping the team in games. I'm looking forward to getting back and feeling like I can do that.

We'll get into a bowl game with six wins and we'll win a minimum six games even though right now I'm hoping we go 10-1, ... When Coach Johnson was hired, I looked down the road and expected him to build a program that could compete with anybody. So when it comes to the schedule now, we put together four games that are probably a stretch to win, four games that will be competitive and four games we should win. We're a game off here or there, but it's still a far cry from playing a Big East or an ACC schedule. That won't happen.

I was going to pitch the first, fourth and seventh games. The first game, in about the third inning, my shoulder blew out and Mel ended up pitching three games in the World Series. He pitched great, but we lost in seven games. On the way back to New York after losing the seventh game, Yogi said to me, ?How did you like pitching and coaching?' I said, ?Fine.' He said, ?Would you do it again next year?' I said, ?Yeah.' The next day, Yogi was fired.

It was one of those games. Neither team played defense tonight.... It was one of those games where guys were scoring. If we would have made a couple of stops, we would have won the game.
